How is it eco?

“Cycle and boat your way through Vietnam’s most beautiful landscapes!”

What better way to enjoy an eco holiday in nature than to sail through flourishing leafy landscapes on a bike? Begin your trip in bustling Hanoi, where you may have a chance to explore the night-market and submerge your senses in the new country. You’ll quickly leave the hubbub and escape into tranquil villages, where you can meet local people and get to know more about traditional ways of life.

Moving further out of the cities, into the national park, you will see the work being done to protect and conserve the unique wildlife of the country, including a visit to the primate sanctuary.

Cycle across islands, between palm fronds and vegetable and flower gardens, stopping at the floating market, and even explore the bay by boat, enjoying fresh local seafood and watching the sunset in complete serenity.

Your tour guides take sustainability very seriously. You will see this in the way they collect trash wherever possible to create a cleaner and more beautiful environment and to set a good example. Your group size will be limited to 10 so that they can effectively guide you on how best to treat the environment and your hosts. Small numbers also allow for your food to be provided locally and sustainably. Your hosts will cook for you, giving you a taste of traditional Vietnamese fare. Your money will go to local people to support a livelihood in tourism rather than more destructive industries. In return for learning about the delicious local food and the beautiful culture, the guides will encourage conversations with locals about maintaining clean, healthy environments.

You will stay with locals in homestays and guest houses run by local people. Learn about Vietnam as locals see it and feel the warmth and hospitality of the culture. Homestays work in rotation through the villages since this shares the wealth and experience throughout the whole village.

Day 1
Welcome to Hanoi

Welcome to Hanoi! Meet your guide at the airport and go to check in at your hotel. Settle in and rest. Today is a free day where you can explore and get some impressions of Vietnam. In the evening, there are chances to attend cultural shows such as Ca Tru, Tuong, Cheo and the unique water puppet show. If you arrive at the weekend, you can explore the vibrancy of the night market. Overnight in Hanoi.

Day 2
Hanoi Village with Bike

Try to get a good night’s sleep on your first night because you will rise early today for an 8.30 am start. You will be collected and driven a little way out of the main bustle of the city to learn about the traditions and customs of the quieter Hanoi villages.

Walk and cycle along the streets, visiting local markets, old houses, temples, and communal houses on the way. To whet your appetite, you will have a cooking demonstration at one of the local family homes.

In the afternoon, set out from Dong Ngac on your bikes. You will be mostly riding along rural lanes, through the surrounding villages to Lien Mac, a beautiful area of immaculately tended vegetables and flowers. Here, you will have a chance to admire the colourful fields and talk to locals about their traditional farming methods. Take another route back to Lien Mac and stop at your homestay for a refreshing drink and to bid farewell to your hosts before you catch the van back to Hanoi for the night.

Day 3
Hanoi to Cuc Phuong National Park

Wake early once again to leave your hotel at 7 am. You will be able to snooze in the car as you are driven for around 3.5 hours to Ninh Binh and into Cuc Phuong National Park. Here, you will visit the primate rescue centre to learn about the invaluable work that is being done to protect the beautiful creatures of Vietnam. After this, fuel up on delicious lunch. Check in to your room early.

In the afternoon, you will trek through the sublime landscape of the park. Along the way, your guide will point out the incredible insects and reptiles of the area. Head back to the visitor centre for dinner, before returning to the park for some moon-lit adventures spotting critters and creatures including civets, owls, large insects, flying squirrels, and bats. You will overnight in the simple guest house here in the park.

Later in the morning, you will head to the Botanical Gardens and the oldest forest in Vietnam. Later still, transfer on to Trang An, a world heritage site. Here, you will glide across the water, amongst towering stone peaks, and into limestone caves. Have lunch at a local restaurant then take a transfer back to Hanoi.

Day 5
Hanoi to Bai Tu Long

Depart for Bai Tu Long from your hotel in the morning. The journey is around four hours and you will arrive at the port around noon. Welcome aboard! You will even get a chance to taste some fruit straight off the tree (it definitely taste better like this)! You may see farmers harvesting peanuts, visit a coconut candy or puffed-rice factory, stop at a market to buy fruit, or take any other opportunity that presents itself. Cai Be Catholic Church is fantastic for photos!

After the bike ride, board a boat to head to the floating market and cruise over the Mekong river to Tan Phong island. Here, a small Sampan boat will paddle through natural waterways to see the beautiful tropical gardens on the islands. Stop for lunch, then head on bikes along small paths under verdant tree-canopy. Here you will discover more of the daily life of the farmers and discover rambutan and logan gardens. Take a ferry crossing to Ngu Hiep island, known for its durian, and continue your cycle ride. Another ferry crossing will take you to Tam Binh, where you will stop for a coffee in the market. Cycle on to more orchards at Vinh Kim, along Rach Gam river to the monument to the Battle of Rạch Gầm-Xoài Mút. Hear tales of what is considered one of the greatest victories in Vietnamese history. You have 5 km more to cycle along the main road to Binh Duc, where you will catch the ferry to Thoi Son Island. Here, overnight at a local homestay.
