"Say 'good-bye' to boring family holidays with this action-packed tour of Costa Rica."

If you’re looking for an exciting, fun and safe adventure for all the family, then this is the dream tour for you. This trip offers a hugely diverse range of activities: hiking through rainforests, taking cable cars and riding zip lines across jungle canopies, white water rafting and sea kayaking, not to mention exploring volcanoes and the pacific coast – whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or a wildlife enthusiast this 2-week long family adventure gives you the chance to discover the very best of Costa Rica.

Starting in San José, you’ll head off to explore key areas in Costa Rica, including Tortuguero, Manuel Antonio, Sarapiqui and La Fortuna. Along the way there are lots of animals – so keep your eyes peeled! Neither you nor the kids will get bored, as each day offers a new activity or adventure. Transfers are kept to a minimum and all the fun is suitable for children aged 9 and above, but can also be tailor-made for younger kids. Happy in the knowledge that your kids are safe whilst also experiencing a new culture and trying out exciting challenges and activities, this is an unforgettable family holiday.

For many people, Costa Rica and ecotourism go hand in hand, as the country has had huge success implementing the responsible environmental policies that a lot of the tourist business in the area abide by. In Costa Rica, the Certification in Sustainable Tourism (CST) program is used to rate businesses on their level of sustainability in regards to nature, culture and community. Pioneer Expedition works in partnership with local businesses and hotels who abide by these models and have gained impressive scores on this scale. All the accommodation used on this tour is CST certified, ensuring that dedication to ecotourism is maintained in all aspects of the trip.

Pioneer Expedition also supports local people in the area. They only hire local guides and drivers and source food from ethical resources in the area. Their local partners are also engaged in a selection of community projects that run reforestation programs in the area and support local schools. Protecting both the wildlife and the community is a key commitment made by Pioneer Expeditions to ensure all their trips have a positive and lasting impact.

Day 1

Arrival: You’ll be met on your arrival at San José airport and transferred to your hotel where you can settle in.

Day 2

To Tortuguero: Head off to Tortuguero on a boat transfer. Along the way you can try an authentic Costa Rican breakfast at a restaurant in Guápiles. Once you get there, explore the tropical rainforest on safe and easy rainforest walking trails, before joining in on a walking tour in Tortuguero town and later heading home via the beach.

Day 3

Animal Sightings: Before breakfast you’ll have the chance to explore the canals by boat, giving you a glimpse of the rainforest and the creatures within it. Then head to the Mawamba park, which has gardens specifically for butterflies, frogs and iguanas, giving you the chance to see some more wildlife.

Day 4

Journey Onwards: Head on to Siquirres for lunch, before reaching Sarapiqui, where you can visit the La Tirimbina private reserve before settling into the lodge.

Day 5

Adventure Awaits: A day of excitement and adrenaline is ahead of you, as you embark on a white water rafting trip down the Sarapiqui river. This 13km river excursion runs through the tropical rainforest and is very safe. The minimum age is nine years.

After all the adrenaline, chill in the National Park at the hot springs in the afternoon.
