"Escape to a world of intermittent phone signal, breath-taking views, and the most pubs per head of any town in Britain!"
Located in the very heart of Wales, the Elan valley covers 70 square miles of countryside, including six magnificent dams. Over 80% of it has been set aside as Sites of Special Interest and the unspoilt nature of its moorlands, bogs, rivers and reservoirs are not only a haven for a diverse collection of plants and animals but is the most significant area for land birds in Wales, providing homes for the rare dunlin and golden plover. Nannerth Cottage, found only minutes from the valley and a short trip away from the River Wye and Cambrian Mountains, is a fantastic spot from which to explore the area.
With a comfortably furnished open-plan living space complete with a range and wood-burner, this traditional, cosy cottage is perfect for relaxing after a long day in the open air. Surrounded by an organic permaculture garden and with free range chickens roaming the site, it offers organic eggs and vegetables while two quiet market towns nearby boast a varied selection of locally sourced products - and an astonishing collection of pubs. Whether you are a walker, biker, birdwatcher, photographer, kayaker – or simply a relaxer –Nannerth Cottage is a peaceful retreat for those wanting to escape the city smoke and embrace the natural Welsh playground.
The Elan Valley, in the heart of Mid Wales, is a beautiful area covered by 12 sites of scientific interest. With so much unspoilt nature on the doorstep, Nannerth Cottage is passionate about preserving it and ensures as low an ecological footprint as possible. Wales is a country with no shortage of water and natural springs gush from the mountains – something that Nannerth Cottage takes full advantage of. The sun in this area is a far more limited resource (!) but with solar panels installed on the site’s barn, even this is utilised. Very conscious about materials used, any products for the cottage are chosen for being eco friendly and no harsh chemicals are brought onto the site.
Nannerth Cottage is rightly proud of its flourishing permaculture garden and much of the produce used by the family - and their guests - is grown here. Fresh, organic and plentiful, it is a wonderful addition to your stay. The site is also home to a growing flock of free range chickens which provide a daily supply of eggs. For produce that can’t be home grown, Nannerth Cottage sources as far as possible from local businesses - and the choice is exceptional, with nearby market towns offering a vast array of organic fruit and vegetables, consciously sourced local meat and freshly baked bread.
