"This award-winning conservation scheme focuses on helping Borneo’s most fascinating and charming species – the orangutan."
Do you want to make a positive impact on the lives of an enchanting, yet endangered species? If the answer’s ‘Yes!’, then The Great Orangutan Project is the right project for you! Based in the Matang Wildlife Centre, this award-winning conservation and protection scheme focuses on helping Borneo’s most fascinating and charming species – the orangutan. The country has suffered from mass deforestation, mining and forest fires; these threats quickly deplete the habitat of this species. However, at the Matang Wildlife Centre, volunteers and project staff work tirelessly to reverse the negative effects that the exploitation of this land has had so far.
At the centre, orphaned and injured orangutans are taken care of, and nursed back to health so they can eventually be released back into their natural habitats. Volunteers help to enhance the orangutans' chances of being released successfully into the wild by providing the animals with stimulating environments, and encouraging their natural behaviour. As a volunteer on the project, you will help maintain and develop the centre by feeding animals, cleaning the wildlife cages and enclosures and taking part in construction and expansion projects so that the ever-growing centre can accommodate more animals! Aside from contributing to orangutan conservation, you can enjoy some incredible scenery - the breathtaking rainforest of Kubah National Park will be the backdrop to your participation, work and other activities!
The Great Orangutan Project aims to work with the Sarawak Forestry Corporation to help orangutan populations become self-sufficient and independent once more. They jointly want to protect habitats, and guarantee that these are secure and friendly environments for the endangered species. Every volunteer’s contribution is essential, as you will be actively working towards the improvement of the environment of the animals, as well as lending a hand with any other tasks that will aid the expansion of the Matang Wildlife Centre.
The project has a huge focus on enrichment, and on encouraging the orangutans to behave naturally in stimulating environments. Investing time and work in enrichment means that the future release of animals is more likely, as they'll be well prepared and able to acclimatise and adjust more easily to life in the wild. The project also features an organic farm, which is kept pure and free of pesticides. This not only guarantees that the animals are fed the best quality food, but the lack of chemicals also protects the land in which the farm is situated. Volunteers on the project help to keep the Matang Wildlife Centre clean, and the gardens up-kept, helping to protect the natural environment so that the orangutans can not only survive, but thrive!
The adventure begins: Arrive into Kuching Airport, Borneo, where a member of the team will meet you. You will then be taken to Basaga Guest House in Kuching, and in the evening you will be given orientation and a welcome dinner. The introductory evening will give you an opportunity to meet your project facilitator as well as your fellow volunteers.
Transfer to the project site: After breakfast, you will be taken to the Matang Wildlife Centre Orangutan Sanctuary, where the awe-inspiring and life-saving work will start. Use this day to settle into life at the centre, meet the project’s staff and get your bearings with a guided tour.
Project Days: Get to work! This will be your chance to contribute to the project and take part in a variety of activities. You will get the opportunity to work with all the animals in the centre, including orangutans and sun bears.
Fond Farewell: After a morning finishing activities and saying goodbye to the animals, pack your bags and transfer back to Basaga Guesthouse. On your final night’s stay you will be treated to a farewell dinner with project staff and the other volunteers, with whom you've spent the last two weeks.
Departure: If you have booked a late departure, you can spend the day visiting Kuching one last time before you board your flight home, or book post tour accommodation and expand your travels in Borneo.
