"The annual migration of Monarch butterflies is one of the planet earth’s most astounding and spectacular natural phenomena, this is your chance to witness it!"
Unable to survive the harsh winters of the United States and southern Canada, these butterflies go ‘long-haul’ during the months of September and October, heading to overwintering sites in central Mexico. This distance, of up to three thousand miles, is much farther than any other tropical butterfly migrates, and is more alike the migrations made by birds and whales. However, no individual butterfly completes the entire round trip – it’s the migrating butterflies’ children and grandchildren that make the return journey!
On this fascinating week-long tour, you’ll get the rare opportunity to experience one of nature’s most incredible events for yourself, as you journey to Mexico in time to witness the migration. Accompanied by a professional naturalist guide, you’ll visit the Piedra Herrada Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, renowned as one of the world’s most important monarch reserves; much more ‘wild’ than many other reserves, a hike through this magical place is truly a unique experience. As well as observing Monarch butterflies, you’ll also spend some time in the colonial town of Valle de Bravo, exploring wonderful museums and enjoying water-based activities on the town’s tranquil lake.
The deep green forests and azure lagoons of tropical America are the inspiration behind EcoColors’ vibrant designation. As well as keeping nature in the name, this sustainable tour operator also aims to put nature, and the preservation of natural environments, at the forefront of its operations. EcoColors’ mission is to deliver innovative and exclusive ecotours in the biologically and culturally rich ‘Mayan World’ of Mexico, and to enhance their travellers’ understanding of the natural environments they visit through ‘quality, warmth and education’. All of the company’s tours aim to show off Mexico’s natural wonders, whilst also contributing to the research and ongoing protection of the country’s natural areas.
EcoColors understands that natural habitats are fragile; the company therefore keeps group numbers small, in order to not exceed the biological ‘carrying capacity’ of ecosystems. EcoColors’ tours also contribute to local economies by incorporating visits to rural areas, thereby supporting the communities that inhabit these areas. To ensure that they stay at the forefront of any developments in the field of sustainability, EcoColors works with multiple research organisations including the WWF and the Ecotourism Society. By adopting a collaborative, multi-organisation approach, these agencies are better able to protect natural habitats and their inhabitants.

Mexico City – Valle de Bravo: Pay a visit to the Anthropology Museum, home to a vast collection of important artefacts. One of the world's best archaeological museums, its most famous exhibit is the 'Aztec Sun Stone', a fascinating cosmological calendar. After your visit, you'll continue to Valle de Bravo, a lovely town surrounded by mountains. The town's excellent hotels and restaurants, and its man-made lake, make it a popular tourist destination.
Butterfly Sanctuaries: Visit two wonderful sanctuaries to encounter the Monarchs. First up is the Piedra Herrada Sanctuary; you'll travel initially by horseback, before continuing on foot through the thick vegetation to find the butterflies. The Piedra Herrada Sanctuary is much 'wilder' than other sanctuaries, providing a more remote and natural experience. Next follows the fantastic Capulin Sanctuary, where you'll discover the Monarch region's biggest and most beautiful prairie – Los Tres Gobernadores ('The Three Governors').
Valle de Bravo: Spend a free day exploring the area surrounding Valle de Bravo at your leisure. Life here revolves around the lake, so be sure to get involved with some fun watersport activities! The lake's calm waters are ideal for sailing, kayaking and water-skiing. You can also choose to go cycling or hang-gliding – the possibilities are endless!
Valle de Bravo – Mexico City: Relax in the morning before returning to your hotel in Mexico City. Your tour will conclude the following day, when you'll transfer to the airport to board your homeward flight.
