"A unique converted barn with 'bales' of character!"
Balebarn Lodge is the award-winning flagship project of Wheatland Farm Eco Lodges, and it’s easy to see why. This transformed one-time cowshed brings together rustic countryside comfort and a sleek modern finish for a sumptuous eco-friendly stay. The lodge retains its original pillars, while the traditional lime plastered walls make it airy and light. Huge bi-fold doors open out onto a wrap-round veranda with a stunning unobstructed view of the countryside and the farm’s largest pond - fancy wild swimming before breakfast?
While Balebarn Lodge's wood-burner ensures that it is undeniably cosy, it can comfortably accommodate up to eight people, with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a spacious living area and a fully fitted kitchen for cooking up a feast of locally sourced produce. The lodge also has a barbeque so you can make the most of the outdoor space. And if your group is a little bigger, you could consider adding the cosy Nuthatch or Honeysuckle Lodges - both sleep four and are just one minute's stroll away. Located near the historic Saxon village of Winkleigh, between Dartmoor and Exmoor, this is a great base to explore some of Devon’s best natural attractions. Immerse yourself in the local history, enjoy beautiful country walks, or borrow free bikes for some fun exploration! There's plenty to do back at home on the farm, too - go wildlife spotting, take the boats out on the pond, or play some outdoor chess or badminton.
Wheatland Farm Eco Lodges pride themselves on their eco-friendly accommodation. This lodge boasts ultra-low carbon status, and the straw bale insulation in the walls is just one example amongst a whole host of super-efficient energy saving features. Balebarn Eco Lodge is the epitome of ethical purchasing and upcycling, with hand-made furniture, frosted porthole bathroom windows made from recycled microwave turntables, and even couch cushions stitched from upcycled silk ties.
This lodge truly emanates the Wheatland Farm belief that there is a better life to be had through sustainability. It is thanks to the addition of Balebarn Eco Lodge that Wheatland Farm won Gold for sustainability in the Visit England Tourism Awards 2015. The judges felt that the lodge ‘further adds to the existing all-embracing experience offered by Wheatland Farm which helps people to re-connect with nature and the simple pleasures of life – without having to be ‘wacky green’. Inspiring stuff!” Wheatland Farm Eco Lodges also hold Gold level approval from the Devon Wildlife Trust; showing they promote local produce, educate people about wildlife and farming, help people access wildlife, run their business sustainably and follow environmental good practice.
