"Experience the full spectrum of wildlife Sweden has to offer and hear the howling of wolves as your night time serenade"

Experience wildlife education at its best on this thrilling tour through wild Sweden. The ultimate trip for any wildlife enthusiast seeking to enhance their knowledge and understanding about the natural world, this eight-day trip will take you deep into the land of wolves, bears, and moose. Not only will you hopefully experience some exhilarating close-up wild animal encounters, but you’ll also learn more about these different species from knowledgeable and inspiring guides. Along the way, you’ll stay in cosy lakeside guesthouses, and even spend the night out in the wild, watching out for nocturnal bear activity from the comfort of a wooden forest hide.

In a small and exclusive group, you’ll hike through forests, paddle across tranquil lakes in Canadian-style canoes, and watch wildlife from purpose-built observation hides. You’ll benefit from the use of good-quality binoculars as well as a professional tracking guidebook, giving you the best possible chance of spotting some of Sweden’s most stunning wildlife within their natural habitats; accompanied by expert and keen-eyed wildlife guides, you might be lucky enough to encounter species such as brown bears, moose, wolves, and beavers. Immerse yourself totally in nature and, after each day of adventure, enjoy hearty and comforting meals at traditional guesthouses.

For over a decade, WildSweden has been giving travellers from all over the world the chance to observe some of Sweden’s most iconic wild animals in their natural environment. The company strives to offer genuine ecotourism experiences that both promote conservation efforts and support local economies; in a country where certain species are sometimes worth more dead than they are alive, and where human-wildlife conflicts are a big issue, WildSweden proves that nature tourism can add value to local communities, and that humans and wild animals can learn to live harmoniously.

The ‘return of the wolves’, for instance, is a hot topic in Sweden at the moment. The company’s guides work to track and monitor a number of wolf packs, with their findings and observations making an important contribution to the Scandinavian Wolf Project, which aims to ‘provide a factual basis for the optimum management of wolves’. There are many human-wildlife conflicts that need to be solved, and WildSweden aim to be a part of these solutions, and to also enrich their travellers’ understanding of and respect for wild animals and nature. In recognition of its work in the field of ecotourism, WildSweden has been approved by the Swedish quality label for ecotourism, ‘Nature’s Best’, since 2005, and was also named the country’s best ecotourism organiser in the 2009 Grand Travel Awards. What’s more, WildSweden was named ‘Tourism Company of the Year in Sweden’ in 2015!

Day 1

Introduction Day: Upon your arrival in Stockholm, you’ll travel two hours to reach Skinnskatteberg. Receive a warm welcome from your hosts Eva and Allan who run the Pensionat Udden, a charming guesthouse overlooking Lake Storsjön. An introductory talk will give you the chance to learn more about the programme, and about Sweden’s large mammals. You’ll also be introduced to the guidebook you’ll use throughout the trip: ‘Tracks and Signs of the Animals and Birds of Britain and Europe’ by Lars-Henrik Olsen. After a hearty dinner overlooking the lake, you'll head into the Bergslagen forest to seek out moose, wolves, lynx and other species. WildSweden’s guides have successfully found moose on every tour since 2003, so you’ll have an excellent chance of seeing some! Return before dark for a good night's sleep.

Day 2

Beaver day: Take a morning walk into a natural area home to a family of beavers. Your expert guide will explain all about beaver behaviour, as well as the threats currently facing the species. Return to the guesthouse for lunch, before hearing from sheep-farmers Alan and Eva, who will share their first-hand experiences of human/animal conflicts. In the afternoon, take some time to explore at your leisure. After a hearty dinner, visit a nearby lake for a ‘beaver safari’. Using a quiet rubber boat, you’ll hopefully be able to spot beavers up-close. There are also moose, deer, foxes, badgers and owls in the area, and as you return to the lodge late in the evening you might even hear wolves howling!

Day 3

A day in the wolf territory: Today begins with a canoe trip across Lake Storsjön; traveling in a Canadian-style canoe is a fantastic way to explore the lake and its surrounding forests. Later in the day you'll attend an informative wolf lecture, led by an expert in the field. Now that you're armed with knowledge, it's time to venture into the wolf territory... Learn the art of tracking wolves by finding paw-prints and droppings, and spend the night camping out within the territory. While you'll need to be very lucky indeed to actually spot a wolf, you'll certainly feel their presence, and many participants on this tour have enjoyed the incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience of hearing the wolves howling to the moon...

Day 4

Brown bear research day: Pack up and begin the journey north to the county of Dalarna. The forests here are home to one of Europe's densest brown bear population. You'll meet Gunther and Andrea, expert researchers who have been heavily involved in brown bear projects over the years, and enjoy an informative lecture. In the afternoon, they'll lead you on an exclusive hiking excursion into the wild forest, where the brown bears freely roam... Again, while you might not spot any bears, you'll certainly learn a great deal about these fantastic animals and will hopefully spot some tracks and signs of their presence. Later, light up the campfire for a hearty outdoor meal, before returning to the lodge to rest.

Day 5

Brown bear watching day: After breakfast, you'll make the hour-long journey to your next forest lodge. Receive a warm welcome from your hosts, Håkan and Eva, and enjoy a cup of hot coffee on the lakeside veranda. After a brief discussion about brown bears, and how to increase your chance of spotting them in the wild, you'll travel to the remote cabin photography hide in the forest. Once you're set up next to one of the cabin's viewing windows, the waiting game begins... As the evening draws in, line up your camera with one of the viewing slots, and then - hope! Outside of the hide is a magical forest glade, and there's a chance that a brown bear might make an appearance. Stay up all night to try and capture a brown bear on film, or snuggle up in one of the hide's comfortable beds. Please note that although the bears do often appear at night, this cannot be guaranteed. It might also be too dark for photography when a bear does appear.

Day 6

Forest and canoeing day: Wake up in the hide and spend the early hours of the morning watching out for any signs of movement or bear presence in the forest glade (they sometimes appear around sunrise). Return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast, before taking a refreshing shower or a dip in the lake. Next, you'll continue to the deep forests of Korså and Lake Hinsen. Take a hike through the forest in the afternoon, or head out onto the lake in a canoe to learn more about the area's staggering biodiversity. See different lichens, mosses, insects and rare birds. In the evening, soak in the wood-heated sauna, or simply sit back and listen to the sounds of the birds in the forest.

Day 7

Departure: Enjoy one final breakfast in the garden at Korså herrgård, sharing together your most memorable moments. When you are ready to leave you'll be transferred to Stockholm Arlanda airport, where the tour concludes.
