The detail

Get involved in a valuable wildlife conservation and research project on the beautiful Suffolk Coast. Staying in the picturesque village of Dunwich, you’ll work within the RSPB’s flagship Minsmere Reserve as well as the National Trust’s Dunwich Heath. Home of the BBC’s Springwatch programme, Minsmere is currently under threat of invasion from an unwelcome visitor: the Pirri pirri bur. This plant originates in Australasia, and is beginning to pose a threat to the reserve’s native vegetation. Focusing on this species, you’ll help to monitor and map the distribution of the plants as well as help to hand-pull an experimental area of the reserve, contributing to research into management techniques in the process.

You’ll get a unique opportunity to enjoy a guided tour of this fantastic wetland reserve and see ‘behind the scenes’ the areas that will be filmed later in the month. You’ll also work at Dunwich Heath, surveying small mammals and learning how to identify and survey the charming Dartford warbler. With the instruction of National Trust experts, you’ll work in pairs to survey a large area of the heath. Finally, you’ll support the work of The Mammal Society, assessing the gender and health of shrews and voles through careful handling, helping to provide base-line data for the National Mammal Database. During your time off explore the uniquely beautiful beaches, forests and heaths of the Suffolk Coast.

Wild Days Conservation, as an Environmental Social Enterprise, is fully committed to ensuring that its actions are beneficial to the natural environment. Working in partnership with wildlife organisations, Wild Days aims to combine valuable wildlife research with practical conservation measures. They also strive to consider the impacts (environmental and social) of their projects, and minimise these wherever possible. For instance, the use of motor vehicles during projects is avoided, accommodation is selected on the basis of being ‘green’ as well as comfortable and locally sourced food that has been grown and reared in an eco-friendly manner is favoured.

On this project, Wild Days works with the RSPB and the National Trust, and also supports the valuable work of The Mammal Society. In the Minsmere Reserve, the Pirri pirri bur (Acaena novae-zelandiae) is an invasive species that is threatening native vegetation. To combat the threat, the RSPB is trialling different control methods; this project, with the help of volunteers, helps to identify and map affected areas in order to allow for ongoing monitoring. This project also provides baseline data to support the work of The Mammal Society, with volunteers helping to collect data for the National Mammal Database.
