Magical frozen kingdoms and palaces of ice have always had their place in fiction and film; from C.S Lewis’ The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, to the glittering success of Disney’s Frozen. I imagine most of us have dreamed of staying in a building made entirely of ice, and The Ice Hotel Experience provides a unique opportunity for those dreams to become a magical reality.
The tour begins with a night spent in Romania’s vibrant capital city, Bucharest. You then exchange this urban environment, for stunning views of the Transylvanian plains as you journey through rural Romania, stopping to visit the magnificent Peles Castle along the way. In the picturesque town of Brasov, you can take a walking tour through the town’s cobbled streets which will reveal its fascinating history, or simply relax in one of its many bohemian cafes. You then travel up the Faragas Mountains to the Ice Hotel, which is situated in a breath-taking winter wonderland. Here you can choose to stay in a snow-suite or igloo, and enjoy a four-course meal in the unique Ice Restaurant, where even the plates are made of ice! The next morning, you can explore the mysterious Bran Castle, known by many as Dracula’s Castle.
The Ice Hotel Experience really focuses on the importance of the mountain environment, both for our own sake and for the many species, such as the incredible mountain goat, lynx and wild bear, which inhabit the snow-capped peaks and slopes. This unique and beautiful landscape, with its breath-taking panoramas and alpine slopes rich with coniferous forests, is a vital habitat and must be protected.
This tour also works towards sustaining the local community, providing numerous jobs for those who live in this remote and beautiful area. In addition, the Ice Hotel and stunning Ice Church are made entirely from ice gathered from the frozen Balea Lake nearby, which provides a continuous and sustainable source of building material. The local workers cut ice blocks from the lake, which are then taken to the construction location, where they are intricately hand-carved by local craftsmen using traditional techniques to create the magical Ice Hotel, as well as the Ice Church. The Hotel and Church are both rebuilt and re-designed each year, making them truly unique, and providing continuous employment for their constructors.
Following your arrival in Bucharest, you will be taken to your accommodation in the Lipscani district where you can enjoy a coffee or glass of wine, before venturing out into the old town to explore and discover the abundant restaurants and bars.
In the morning, you will travel to Transylvania, via Sinaia, visiting the spectacular Peles Castle along the way. You will then head on to the medieval town of Brasov, where you can enjoy lunch and coffee in one of its many bohemian cafes, and spend the rest of the afternoon roaming around the charming cobbled streets, and soaking up the history of this picturesque town.
You will travel through the Fagaras Mountains to the cable car, which will then take you up to Balea Lake and the Ice Hotel. Here, you can experience a wonderful afternoon on the mountain with a range of snow-based activities, including the fantastic Tunnel Trek which takes you through the mountain and out again, providing stunning views of the Carpathian Mountains, and perhaps a glimpse of the nimble mountain goat. You will then get ready for your amazing night in the Ice Hotel, which begins with the Ice Hotel Dining Experience and drinks at the Sub Zero Ice Bar.
You will travel back through Transylvania, stopping to explore Bran Castle along the way, known to many as Dracula’s Castle, before journeying back to Bucharest for your last night.
You will be taken back to the airport in time for the flight home.
