The detail

"The 'what we love' sections covers it perfectly, river cruises, roam through the rainforest then get face to face with great apes, definitely worth a read!"

Situated deep within the Lower Kinabatangan Floodplain Rainforest in Sabah, this amazing project will immerse you in Borneo’s rich array of wildlife. The main aim of this project is to help with the conservation of orangutans and pygmy elephants in the biologically important ‘Corridor of Life’. A protected WWF area, this stunning location is pivotal in ensuring the balance of land-use for both local people and wildlife. With only 1,500 wild pygmy elephants remaining, this project is the perfect way to help ensure the continued survival of these magnificent animals. Further to conservation work, staying in a local B&B and socialising with the locals offers an insight into their fascinating culture and way of life.

Volunteers have several activities to get involved with outside of project work; boat trips and rainforest treks showcase the diverse life which can be found in this area, as well as offering hands-on experience in the monitoring of the animals. Throughout the trip you will learn about these incredible mammals and their habitats, information which can then be taught to locals and their children, encouraging them to continue with the conservation efforts. Embarking on this project not only guarantees you an unforgettable experience, but also leaves you safe in the knowledge that you are doing something to help and protect two beautiful species and their precious habitats!

A large amount of work is required to help conserve orangutans and pygmy elephants, two species of threatened animals, with both of them being particularly vulnerable to the effects of deforestation and interactions from humans. As a result, this project is extremely important in helping to minimise these impacts through education and conservation measures. Monitoring the patterns and numbers of these mammals in the area is a useful way of seeing how well they are being supported in the current habitat. This also provides a better understanding of their behaviour which can be used to help predict how the animals will react to any changes in their environment.

Working with the local community and schoolchildren provides volunteers with a practical way to make a difference. Teaching them and increasing the awareness of the importance of conservation means more sustainable practices can be adopted as well as reducing the conflict between people and animals. This will help to maintain and support the local environment in addition to the people and animals that live there. Furthermore, the project provides the opportunity to plant trees which will ensure that these orangutans and elephants will have a large, suitable habitat to live in and all of these initiatives will help their numbers to thrive.
