How is it eco?
The detail

The Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico has a huge amount to offer for any nature lover: thick jungles, pristine beaches and stunning underground pools known as cenotes, to name but a few of its natural wonders. The peninsula is also home to an impressive 180 different species of reptiles and amphibians, making it the perfect location for encountering wildlife and embarking on reptilian adventures. This week long eco-tour gives you the chance to get up close and personal with all the cold-blooded creatures the country has to offer, as you swim with turtles, search for crocs, and track down iguanas, snakes and so much more.

The tour not only gives you the chance to witness a huge variety of different animals, but also to visit different parts of the peninsula and to discover excitingly diverse habitats. You’ll explore wetland areas in search of crocodiles, trek in caves to find bat-eating snakes, snorkel in the beautiful reefs of Cozumel and swim in the Caribbean Sea. On top of all the adventure, you’ll also have the chance to spend some time in the city of Cancún, lazing around on its beaches and trying out amazing Mexican cuisine. This is the perfect tour for any reptile-lover looking to encounter wildlife in its natural habitat, whilst also exploring breath-taking landscapes and discovering all that Mexico has to offer.

The deep green forests and azure lagoons of tropical America are the inspiration behind EcoColors’ vibrant designation. As well as keeping nature in the name, this sustainable tour operator also aims to put nature, and the preservation of natural environments, at the forefront of its operations. EcoColors’ mission is to deliver innovative and exclusive ecotours in the biologically and culturally rich ‘Mayan World’ of Mexico, and to enhance their travellers’ understanding of the natural environments they visit through ‘quality, warmth and education’. All of the company’s tours aim to show off Mexico’s natural wonders, whilst also contributing to the research and ongoing protection of the country’s natural areas.

EcoColors understands that natural habitats are fragile; the company therefore keeps group numbers small, in order to not exceed the biological ‘carrying capacity’ of ecosystems. EcoColors’ tours also contribute to local economies by incorporating visits to rural areas, thereby supporting the communities that inhabit these areas. To ensure that they stay at the forefront of any developments in the field of sustainability, EcoColors works with multiple research organisations including the WWF and the Ecotourism Society. By adopting a collaborative, multi-organisation approach, these agencies are better able to protect natural habitats and their inhabitants.

Day 1

Settling In: Welcome to Mexico! Make yourself at home, wander around Cancún and prepare yourself for a week of reptilian adventures.

Day 2

Croc Patrol: Take a boat trip through the dense wetlands of the Isla Blanca area, searching for crocodiles along the way. Being on the water gives you the perfect chance to see them up close and in the wild! You’ll spend the night in Cancún, where there are loads of restaurants and bars to check out.

Day 3

Reptile Research: You’ll have the chance to see even more of Mexico on your third day as you head over to the paradise island of Cozumel in the Eastern Caribbean sea. Continue searching for crocodiles and also keep your eyes peeled for green iguanas along the way, then spend the night exploring Cozumel.

Day 4

Underwater Exploration: You’ll spend your morning in search of turtles, snorkelling through the breath-taking reefs of Cozumel. Afterwards, hop on the ferry to Katemo where the real adventure begins: exploring dark caves in search of bat-eating snakes. An evening with a twist, off you go on a nocturnal boat trip, where you’ll have the chance to see crocodile eyes glinting in the darkness…

Day 5

Turtle Bay: Akumal is renowned for being ‘the place of the turtle’ and this is where you’ll be heading in the morning. Here you can swim side by side with turtles in an amazing wildlife experience. Afterwards, move on to an animal reserve, which you’ll also get to experience wildlife-watching by night, as your guide takes you on a nocturnal walk looking for reptiles and amphibians. Return to your hotel in Cancún later in the evening.

Day 6

Chillax in Cancún: Now you’re back in Cancún you have the chance to spend a day exploring the area or sunbathing on the beach. Whether you just want to catch some rays, chill with the locals in El Parque de las Palapas, or explore the archaeological zone, it’s entirely up to you.

Day 7

Adios Amigos: Sadly all good things must come to an end. Take a transfer back to the airport or continue your adventures to your next destination in Mexico or beyond.
