The detail

"You're always learning, this trip is a prime example of how holiday's can be educational as well as relaxing. Learn the technique of trekking whilst discovering wildlife!"

There are around 250-340 Malayan Tigers left in the wild, and their numbers are, sadly, ever-decreasing. Contribute to their conservation by volunteering on the fringes of one of the world’s oldest rainforests – Taman Negara. Estimated to be over 130 million years old, this ancient jungle is home to many endangered species including leopards, elephants, sun bears and, of course, Malayan tigers. On this project, based in the Merapoh region, you will participate in ‘Educational, Conservation and Observation (ECO) Walks’ in the tropical rainforest, learning to recognise tell-tale signs of poachers as well as animal tracks. Volunteers will record the location of any snares they might find before these traps are removed and destroyed. Even the mere presence of volunteers will help to deter poachers in the area.

You will also work alongside a partner organisation that works to protect the limestone caves of the Merapoh region, giving you the chance to discover the beauty of the caves for yourself. The project also has close links with the indigenous Batek people. The ‘Batek ladies’ will lead you through the rainforest on an illuminating and educational 4-5 hour foraging session, where you’ll collect whatever they need. You might gather leaves for weaving, go fishing, or hunt some tasty rats for dinner!

The survival of several endangered species, including tigers, elephants, leopards and tapirs, depends on their ability to pass safely through the one remaining rainforest connection between the main mountain range in West Malaysia and Taman Negara National Park. If these animals can pass through this corridor safely, wild populations in both regions can interbreed, improving their chances of survival. This project, alongside other organisations like the Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers (MYCAT) and the Management and Ecology of Malaysian Elephants (MEME), supports the effort to reduce poaching and human impacts in this area by gathering and passing on information and data to such relevant organisations.

The project also works to protect the limestone caves of the region, in partnership with the local tour operators. Lime companies have been targeting the caves with the aim of selling the lime for cement, a development that would threaten the existence of these caves which have been used by the Batek and Malay people for centuries. By visiting the caves, volunteers on the project strengthen the case against demolishing them. Finally, the project supports and works collaboratively with the local Batek people by providing employment, education and waste management solutions. In return, they share their vast knowledge and experience of the rainforest with volunteers.
