The detail

"Spend a week in the Bornean jungle, getting close to orangutans in the wild and in rehabilitation centres."

Borneo is the dream destination to see orangutans in their natural habitat. Not only is Tanjung Puting National Park home to a huge population of primates, but it’s also world-renowned for conservation efforts to protect orangutans’ habitats from the oil palm industry and illegal logging. This tour combines both these aspects of the National Park to offer a thrilling adventure through the jungle, witnessing creatures in the wild and within rehabilitation centres. Spend a week in the jungle, experiencing incredible animals and nature whilst having a positive impact on your surroundings.

The first few nights are spent aboard a klotok – an Indonesian houseboat – offering a unique perspective of the wildlife from the water and an exciting and different living arrangement. When you’re not on the water, you’ll either be trekking through dense rainforest on the look-out for wild animals, or spending time watching orangutans at a rehabilitation centre. The trip gets even wilder, as you spend a day trekking in the depths of the jungle and the night sleeping there; this is the perfect getaway from tourist trails and a rare opportunity to enjoy unspoiled nature, as you listen out from your tent for monkey calls and rustling in the trees around you...

Pioneer Expeditions are committed to running tours that both protect and promote the environment and local communities. Illegal logging in Borneo is destroying habitats for an array of wildlife, especially orangutans. During this trip, visitors are actively encouraged to help growth in the jungle at the reforestation program. Plus, for every tour to Borneo that is sold, a percentage of the money is also given directly to the international Orangutan foundation, which strives to protect orangutan habitats. A part of the trip cost is also donated to adopt an orangutan for a year and protect the forest through a Safeguard program. You can even make your own personal contribution, by planting a tree in the National Park!

In addition to these steps, Pioneer Expeditions employs and trains people from the local community to work as guides, which not only supports locals financially, but also ensures that as a visitor you have the most authentic experience possible. Pioneer Expeditions ensure that all trips are run in an entirely eco-friendly manner, which includes removing litter from campsites, using biodegradable products, avoiding all forms of pollution, and having a zero tolerance policy to any destruction of the nature encountered on the trip.

Day 1

Learning the Ropes: You’ll be met on your arrival at Jakarta airport and taken to the hotel. After settling in and enjoying a welcome dinner, there’s an information session about the trip and all the safety requirements needed for seeing orangutans in the wild!

Day 2

Wet and Wild: The morning is spent on a quite a journey – taking a small short haul flight to Pangkalan Bun to reach the water gateway to the National Park. Welcome to your temporary new home – an Indonesian houseboat! The day will be spent exploring the main river in the National Park, watching animals on the riverbank and some cheeky Proboscis monkeys (that are only found in Borneo!) swinging through the trees.

Day 3

Monkeys Munching: Continuing the tour on the boat, head up to Camp Leakey, a key spot on this wildlife tour. After learning about the area, set off on foot through the jungle to see orangutans, gibbons, wild birds and even wild pigs… Lunch will be served on the boat – but don’t forget you’re not the only ones who need to eat! Later in the afternoon, head over to the feeding platform at Camp Leakey to see semi-wild orangutans grabbing a bit to eat!

Day 4

Nocturnal Adventure: It’s time to journey to the second camp, Pondok Tanggung, which is about 90 minutes away from Camp Leakey. There’s the chance to see more orangutans here before you prepare yourself for a night in the jungle. After a 4-hour trek through this amazing flora it’ll be time to set up camp in a simple tent. Keep your eyes peeled for wild monkeys and any other creatures who might cross your path.

Day 5

Contribute to Conservation: After an exhilarating night in the wild, it’s time to return to the houseboat. Head down the river to Pasalat Camp, which runs a Carbon Offsetting program to encourage responsible tourism. There’s so much to learn here about the incredibly important work that the Friends of the National Parks Foundation in Indonesia carries out. Add your own signature to their reforestation program by planting a tree as a small way of giving back the National Park.

Day 6

Back to Civilization: After breakfast, it’s sadly time to take a flight back to Jakarta and return to the hotel. It’s not quite over yet though, as there’ll be a farewell dinner to celebrate a fantastic trip witnessing wild animals and learning all about conservation and the orangutans’ struggles in Borneo.

Day 7

Home or Beach? All good things must come to an end, and now it is time to head home…. Alternatively, if you’re not quite ready to face reality yet, you could always opt to extend your tour and visit the beaches at Tiger Island, an Indonesian paradise.
