Through a mixture of hiking, biking, rafting, and canyoning, you will explore a dreamy landscape of tropical flora and fauna. Visit the Swing at the End of the World for a vista so incredible you have to see it to believe it.
Your knowledgeable guide will help you get to know this country with one of the highest biodiversities on earth and a geography just as spectacular, right along the equator. Prepare chocolate the ancestral way with a native Kichwa family in the Amazon Rainforest and take part in organic cooking lesson with traditional fresh ingredients, side by side with local people in the heart of the Andes. Fly in to Quito, the best preserved colonial city in America and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is considered the cultural capital of South America and the second most important city of the old Inca Empire. Depending on your flight times, you might have time to explore the town. If you’re interested in a tour or activity, let us know and we’ll help you to organize something. In the evening you will meet your tour leader in your hotel for a welcome briefing.
After breakfast you will be leaving Quito and head southwards along the incredible Avenue of Volcanoes, while getting to see the stunning, colourful Andean fields. You will head to Cotopaxi National Park, where you will hike around Limpiopungo Lagoon at the foothills of the Rumiñahui volcano. From here you will have a stunning view of the Cotopaxi Volcano, highest active volcano in the world. In the afternoon, you will continue to drive towards the Llangantes National Park, “the sacred mountain”, until we reach the town of Baños at the entrance to the Amazon. Here you can enjoy incredible nightlife, drinking cocktails and salsa dancing.
This morning gets really active. Set off on a mountain bike from Llangantes National Park down to the Pastaza River Canyon, enjoying incredible views of the cloud forest. The road will carry you through Andean farms and canyons, resplendent with waterfalls. Descending in the the jungle, you will enjoy another breathtaking view of Baños, well known for its spectacular location at the foothills of the Tungurahua volcano. In the afternoon there will be time to explore the town. Getting to know it during the day rather than just at night - and head to the incredible Swing at the End of the World, the location of the winning photograph in the National Geographic 2014 photo contest. Settle down for a good night in your hotel after a long and tiring day!
This morning, hit the Road of the Waterfalls. The first stop will be the Bride’s Veil waterfall. From here, you will take a cable car across the Pastaza River, then hike down to the Pailon del Diablo waterfall - the second highest falls in Ecuador! Next, you will head deeper into the jungle back inside Llanganates National Park. The name ‘Llanganates’ comes from “beautiful mountain” in the local language. It was here that 600 years ago Incas were said to have hidden their gold. Explorers have spent many years looking for the treasure with no luck. Some have simply disappeared into the dense, pristine jungle! During the hike, you will climb along several waterfalls. The local guide will tell you all about the incredible nature and wildlife to be found here. You will then spend the night at a local jungle lodge run by a Kichwa indigenous family NOTE: this is a very basic accommodation, you will have your room but will have to share the bathroom, the rooms are very clean and all the beds have mosquito nets. There is no electricity in the room but there is a social area where you can have access to power to charge your batteries.
Begin the day early by prepping gear to paddle out into the wild waves of the Jatunyacu River. You will start with a safety briefing, then head out into the stunning surroundings. There is no better way to get a feel for the majesty of the rainforest. The river is known for its clean water and awesome rapids. Your leader will set you some games and challenges and you will explore the canyon. Tired and exhilarated, you will end the journey with a picnic to refuel. You will conclude the day with a drive back up to the Andes, stopping to visit the paradise of hummingbirds in Guango Reserve, and finally continuing up to the volcanic hot springs resort, where we will spend the night. After your first few days so action-packed, this is the ideal place to relax and re-energise.
Day six will begin with a hike of the nearby Cayambe Coca Ecological Reserve. Here you will see Ecuador’s glorious flora, including abundant orchids and perhaps a glimpse of some of the unique bird life here. Next, you will travel across the Andes and stop by the equator and if you feel like it, take a photo with a foot in either hemisphere! Your guide will suggest a place for some delicious food before you head to the Otavalo Indigenous Market where you will shop and get to know the wonderful indigenous culture still thriving here. In the late afternoon you will then be transferred to the hacienda where you will stay the night. Here you can enjoy a welcome cocktail and dinner.
Start your day with a healthy and delicious breakfast to power you through the morning. Next, you will have a short drive to the Cotacachi Cayapas Ecological Reserve. On of the main attractions here is the Cuicocha Crater Lake and your adventure will take you on a trek around the still active volcano. You will enjoy breathtaking scenery. At the end of the hike you will take a boat ride to the centre of the cater to observe the activity of the volcano. You will see bubbles rise from the centre of the caldera as though some great creature is sleeping soundly underneath. In the afternoon you will drive back to Quito, where all the adventure began! In the evening you will have a farewell dinner with your guide and the other members of your group.
