"Dive into the deep with the support of global recognised research to discover true Megafauna"
Find yourself in the beauty and wonder of the raw underwater environment of Tofo, Mozambique. Due to the magnificent mega fauna, makes this tropical landscape is one of the most exceptional marine environments in the world! If you want an experience where you can not only gain a diving qualification, work closely with the world’s leading marine biologists and but also witness multitudes of manta rays, whale sharks and other incredible creatures, then this is the experience for you.
On this unique project, you will directly contribute to marine conservation and the actions of the Marine Mega Fauna Foundation. Weekdays will be spent working with project, activities such as laser measuring and assisting scientists with taking biological samples of the majestic manta rays, taking pictures of the underwater fingerprints of whale sharks, and monitoring humpback whales are only some of the areas of work you will be involved with. Weekends are free for you to do whatever you please in this beautiful landscape. This is an experience of a lifetime, where volunteers learn valuable skills while working to conserve and protect the magnificent creatures of the deep.
The animals found along the Mozambican coastline are key components of marine ecosystems and are some of the most captivating animals on the planet. Unfortunately, these animals are the first to be reduced by human activity, such as fishing and water pollution, due to their low reproductive rates and longevity. Therefore, in order to research, protect and conserve marine megafauna along this coastline, the Marine Mega Fauna Foundation (MMF) was created in 2009.
Volunteers on this project collect important scientific data on a wide variety of the animals, which is then used to evaluate their international conservation status. For example, in the case of whale sharks, research is designed to provide data on the population structure and migratory patterns. Creatures such as sea turtles, which are fully protected in Mozambican waters, are still illegally caught for food. However, the MMF works to track the extent of poaching locally, and to assist the authorities with enforcement. In turn, the work done whilst on this project helps scientists conduct cutting-edge research that can be directly applied to the conservation of these incredible marine creatures.
First day in Paradise: Arrive into Tofo via Inhambane Airport. A representative will meet you and help you settle into your accommodation.

Project Days: Weekdays will be spent working on scientific activities including research dives, snorkeling trips and other daily research initiatives. These will actively contribute to the research gathered on the many species that live in the surrounding waters. Don’t worry, it’s not all ‘work, work, work’ - you’ll still have plenty of time to discover all Tofo has to offer on the weekends!
