The detail

"Get up close and personal with sea turtles in one of only four tropical fjords in the world and help make a real difference with this conservation project!"

Costa Rica’s Golfo Dulce, situated just off the world-famous Osa peninsula, is just as sweet as it sounds. One of only four tropical fjords in existence, this beautifully wild gulf is home to a host of wildlife including macaws, dolphins, monkeys, whales and, of course, sea turtles. This fascinating area is the location for an important sea turtle conservation programme, which focuses on studying Hawksbill and Eastern Pacific Green Turtles in particular. Whilst most sea turtle conservation work is concentrated on turtles’ nesting beaches, this project aims to better understand the critically important in-water foraging and nesting areas that turtles migrate between.

Volunteers on this project should be strong swimmers in a good physical condition; be prepared for long hours spent working in hot and humid conditions as you help conduct in-water monitoring surveys at least twice a week (weather permitting). You’ll gather important data on individual sea turtles, and might also lend a hand at the project’s rescue centre, where your duties could include feeding the turtles or keeping the centre clean and tidy. Living communally with other like-minded volunteers, you’ll live in fairly basic conditions – but that’s all part of the fun, right? During your free time, explore the Osa peninsula, one of the world’s biodiversity ‘hotspots’, and enjoy some fantastic swimming and snorkelling in the clear, calm waters.

One of only four tropical fjords in existence, very little is known about the unique habitats of the Golfo Dulce. This astoundingly beautiful and highly biodiverse area is home to a wealth of wildlife including sea turtles. Due to the distinctive biological characteristics of sea turtles, conservation of the species is often very complex and challenging, and requires a long-term commitment to ensure any project’s success. The international NGO that runs this project has worked alongside scientists, educators and conservationists for over twenty years, helping to promote sustainable sea turtle projects in the area, as well as throughout the wider Caribbean region.

This In-Water Sea Turtle Conservation project focuses on studying Hawksbill and Eastern Pacific Green Turtles. The project’s goal is to conserve turtles and ensure their long-term protection, whilst also involving and educating the local community – this, in turn, also helps to generate an alternative and sustainable source of income for local people. Volunteers on this project work in the water to help gather data about turtles’ population structure, genetic origin, health status, and habitat use. This data is then used to assess the types of threats that sea turtles might be exposed to in that particular area. The project also runs a rescue and rehabilitation centre for sea turtles, and is involved in important mangrove reforestation efforts.
