The detail

“Learn the ancient art and science of animal tracking in the wilderness of southern Africa.”

Experience the ultimate wilderness immersion as you learn how to track and trail iconic African species on foot. On this course, which suits gap year students, nature-lovers, and researchers, you’ll travel to some of the most remote wilderness areas of Botswana and South Africa to learn ancient tracking skills. Working alongside certified Shangaan trackers, who have mastered traditional hunter-gatherer skills, you’ll go on daily wilderness walks, learning how to identify and interpret animal tracks and signs, and picking up other techniques and skills that allow you to truly connect with wildlife and your surrounding environment. At the end of the course you’ll even have the opportunity to take an assessment endorsed by the Field Guides Association of South Africa (FGASA), and gain certification!

In many parts of Africa, the ancient skills of wild animal tracking are being lost at an alarming rate. With the rapid development of technologies and urbanisation, much of humanity’s connection with the natural world is being eroded – and it is this process that EcoTraining is aiming to reverse, by providing programs like this to encourage a greater respect and appreciation for the natural world. By passing on indigenous wilderness skills through providing training, EcoTraining helps to preserve and protect ancient traditions and skills, while also conserving some of Earth’s last surviving wild places and the species that live there.
