The detail

Get involved in a community and conservation project on a tropical, coral-fringed island off the East coast of Peninsular Malaysia. This project offers real variety: volunteers can expect to teach children, protect marine life, and generally help to conserve the beautiful Perhentian islands. A typical day for a volunteer might include lesson-planning, leading a School Club, painting a mural or signboard, snorkelling or playing with the local children. You will also meet the lively ladies of the Perhentian Island Ladies Association (PILA), who lead a weekly session on traditional Malaysian cake-making. Volunteers can support these ladies by encouraging tourists to attend their sessions, thereby boosting the ladies’ income. Conservation and cake: a winning partnership.

Ranked the ‘number one beach location in Malaysia’ by CNN in 2013, the dazzling white shores of the Perhentian islands are truly idyllic. In your free time you can explore your surroundings, dive in the azure waters, or take some time out to sun yourself on the sand. There are local restaurants and stalls offering up delicious cuisine, and once a week local families take in volunteers for a traditional Malay meal. You’re sure to have a truly immersive and authentic experience, living alongside local people in a traditional Malaysian village who will share their culture with you as you engage with them through the project.

The Ecoteer House Community and Conservation Project is a flagship venture for Fuze Ecoteer, the company who set it up. The project offers a multi-pronged approach at ensuring the sustainability of the Perhentian islands and their inhabitants. The project’s team has started up a recycling and composting initiative on the island, with volunteers helping out with the recycling competition at the local primary school to try and reduce the problem of waste on the island’s beaches. Ecoteer House has also invested in the village financially, with money spent on various community services. A ‘Trash for Cash’ scheme will also be expanded.

A huge part of the project is based around ‘conservation through education’, with School Club sessions on topics such as Eco School and Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots Programme. These sessions are helping to make local children more aware of environmental issues, and to empower them to engage with these issues themselves to make an impact. Indeed, school teachers have noticed that children are more aware of environmental issues, and also have improved English skills, thanks to the projects’ School Clubs. The project doesn’t only focus on children: established in 2012, the Perhentian Island Ladies Association (PILA) has a newly opened restaurant which provides full-time jobs for six ex-housewives. PILA also benefit from leading weekly ‘kuih’-making sessions, in which tourists can buy traditional cakes.

Day 1

You will arrive on the island and travel to your host-village by boat transfer. During the afternoon you’ll receive an orientation briefing including information about the project, a tour of the village and a session on snorkelling. In the evening there will be a marine presentation and dinner before you clock-off for the evening and enjoy some rest and relaxation in your new island home.

Day 2

In the morning, you will work with other volunteers to prepare lesson plans for School Club sessions (English and Eco-Snorkelling). Volunteers will later lead the afternoon Eco-Snorkelling session. If the club doesn’t run, you will help with a beach clean-up session.

Day 3

Preparation for the Ecoteer Environmental Club will be done in the morning, with volunteers leading a session on English in the afternoon.

Day 4

You will get stuck in to some community development work in the morning – you might be painting murals or signboards, maintaining a herb garden or helping out with mini DIY/construction projects. In the afternoon volunteers will enjoy a Snorkel Tour, and will also assist with a coral survey as part of this activity.

Day 5

In the morning volunteers will lead the Ecoteer Environmental Club session, and in the afternoon will prepare for and later teach an Adult English class.

Day 6

Again, volunteers will get their hands dirty with some community development work (mural painting, beach clean-up, DIY etc). In the evening, enjoy an evening of traditional cake-making and baking with the ladies of PILA!

Day 7

Volunteers will either depart or have a free day on the island.
