The detail

Flatback Sea Turtles. A particular kind of turtle that you might buy at a Swedish furniture outlet, and later assemble yourself? No. That’s a flatpack turtle – totally different thing. Let’s be serious for a minute though - flatback sea turtles can be found along the sandy beaches and shallow waters of Australia’s coastline, and take their name from their flattened shell. Although not as vulnerable as some other turtle species, flatback turtles are threatened by habitat loss, oceanic pollution, climate change and the wildlife trade, among other factors. On this meaningful and rewarding conservation project, volunteers work alongside researchers to gather crucial data on the species, helping to protect flatback sea turtles and ensure their long-term survival.

Staying in the stunning Eco Beach Resort on Western Australia’s Kimberley Coast, you’ll play an important role in monitoring flatback turtles, helping to carry out various project activities including conducting beach patrols, tagging and measuring individual turtles, counting eggs, and recording nest data. Working closely with turtles, this is a unique and rare chance to really connect with the natural world that surrounds you! As well as contributing to an important scientific research project, you’ll also get the chance to enjoy some of Australia’s most beautiful coastal scenery, and there’ll be plenty of free time to enjoy the fantastic facilities at the eco-friendly (and award-winning!) Eco Beach Resort.

Discover the very best of Australia’s natural world, and, most importantly, make a positive difference as you travel. Australia Nature Tours is a tour operator owned by Conservation Volunteers Australia, the country’s biggest not-for-profit conservation organisation. All of their tours contribute directly to conservation outcomes – travellers help to conserve Australia’s wildlife, national parks and conservation reserves, making a valuable impact. The company’s ‘Naturewise Eco Escapes’ give travellers the chance to enjoy close-up interactions with wildlife and gain an exclusive insight into conservation work being done at Australia’s national parks and conservation reserves. Their tours offer travellers the chance to both connect and contribute.

Flatback turtles are under threat in their natural environment from a number of factors including habitat loss, the wildlife trade, pollution and climate change, and are also hunted for their meat and eggs. For a number of years, Conservation Volunteers Australia has been gathering crucial data on the flatback turtles that nest at Eco Beach, helping to protect and ensure the long-term survival of the species. On this Eco Beach Turtles project, volunteers conduct daily morning and evening beach patrols, helping to check for nesting turtles and gather data. Naturewise Eco Escapes believe that it is important to create and share eco-holidays that give something back to nature and local communities, whilst also creating enriching and rewarding experiences for travellers.
