"Enjoy a little oasis of peace and luxury among the dunes of Namibia"
The camp provides a more down-to-earth, yet stylish, experience. It has an unparalleled natural charm, which courts the young and more adventurous traveler.
Positioned on the edge of a 250-metre high dune, the Dune Camp sleeps a maximum of 12 guests in a totally pristine setting. The tents (which have recently been entirely revamped) are pitched on wooden platforms and are comfortable and spacious including a private bathroom. A generous deck allows for safe sleep-outs under the stars, imparting a rather civilized camping experience.
The main tent houses a lounge, dining area and an open-plan kitchen where you can chat to the desert chef, while he prepares lavish meals. Enjoy a cold drink around the campfire on the sundowner deck, where fellow travelers can be met and stories of the day will make their rounds in true African tradition.
The charm of the camp lies in its tranquil, intimate atmosphere, capturing the romance of a bygone era… Dune Camp requires a minimum stay of two nights and a day-safari with picnic lunch en-route is part of the package.
Since its inception 15 years ago, Wolwedans has been guided by an approach where people, nature and business were all equally important. Right from the start the commercial aim of the business has been to ensure the NamibRand Nature Reserve’s financial viability, assuring the conservation of the Pro-Namib for future generations. This approach was captured in Wolwedans’ earliest mission statement: “We are committed to sustainable growth by carefully balancing quality leadership, economic progress, social responsibility and care for our environment” (Dec 1998).
In 2011, as a result of Wolwedans’ efforts over the last decade, it was chosen as a founding member of the Global Ecosphere Retreats, an initiative spearheaded by the Zeitz Foundation. The Zeitz Foundation aims to transform all that we do into ways and means to move this world forward in a sustainable manner. It is inspired by a vision of the Ecosphere – our planet and all of its life-sustaining regions – maintained in the healthiest possible state. Global Ecosphere Retreats are committed to promoting an inclusive, holistic paradigm of conservation that enhances livelihoods and fosters intercultural dialogue.
Wolwedans officially became a Long Run Destination, Global Ecosphere Retreat® certified, on 17 November 2011 as a result of the work described within this executive summary. The Long Run Initiative is the flagship programme of the Zeitz Foundation. Being certified means that we are leaders in sustainable development and that we work on sustainable, mostly tourism-driven enterprises, whilst fostering community development, conservation support and cultural stewardship. Being Global Ecosphere Retreat® (GER) certified shows that we are not only committed to sustainability, but effectively demonstrate that our resources are sustainably managed.
