“Travel to South Africa to learn animal tracking and bush survival skills - and kickstart your career in conservation.”

Unleash your inner Bear Grylls/Attenborough on a 2-week Dangerous Game Training programme in a ‘Big Five’ reserve in South Africa. For those with an interest in conservation work, this is the perfect opportunity to gain a unique insight into the running of an important wildlife reserve. You’ll learn how to interpret animal signs and behaviour, and assess situations to ensure the safety of both humans and animals. You’ll also pick up practical bush survival skills such as sourcing water and protein, and navigation. And of course, you’ll get a chance to help out with wildlife management activities, contributing to building a safer and brighter future for several African species.

When we venture into the wild to observe animals, we are visiting their home – not the other way round. Nkonzo Bush Academy understands this fact, and aims to conduct all their activities with the utmost respect for native flora and fauna. The company’s goal is to safely conduct their work in the fields of research, ethical conservation, and ecological management, without altering animals’ natural behaviour or damaging ecosystems. By working to protect endangered species and enhance travellers’ education on wildlife and conservation issues, Nkonzo Bush Academy aims to only create positive impacts.
On this program, participants learn skills that will allow them to pursue a career in the wildlife conservation industry; throughout the course, Nkonzo focuses on ethics and safety, to ensure that the relationship between the student and the natural environment is a positive one. Participants also get the chance to contribute to various game reserve conservation initiatives: in the past, these have included reproduction rates, carrying capacity, human impact, and interspecies interactions. The support of program participants contributes to the reserves’ daily operations, and also helps to improve the welfare of South African wildlife in the long term.

Day 1

Programme begins: Spend your arrival day at your leisure, exploring Mossel Bay and getting used to your new surroundings.

Day 2

Orientation: Get acquainted with the team, and receive an orientation/project introduction. This is also when you’ll learn more about your daily tasks and the programme schedule.

Day 3-14

Life on the project: Spend your first day out in the field, completing training and working in the reserve. After this, you’ll spend each weekday travelling to the reserve for project activities, with Fridays reserved for lectures and workshops (which take place in town). On the weekends, you’ll be free to explore the coastal town of Mossel Bay at your leisure – be sure to take advantage of the tourist activities and discover the local culture!
