"Explore one of the best places for birding in the World and see first hand birds held sacred by ancient civilisations!"

Costa Rica is an ornithologist's heaven. According to the Costa Rican Rare Birds and Records Committee, the country is home to 918 species. This is more than have been recorded in all of the United States and Canada combined. This tour takes you to explore the rich offerings of Costa Rica’s lucious national parks. From elegance of the Agami heron, to the majestic Resplendent Quetzal, you will see some of the World’s most beautiful birds. Other targets include: Flame-colored Tanager, Ruddy-capped Nightingale-Thrush, Collared Redstar, Black-faced Solitaire, and many more.

Our operator is designed to have as little environmental impact as possible. They hope to demonstrate what stunning places the rainforests of Costa Rica are and do their best to keep them alive and healthy. They are proud to be one of the first companies in Costa Rica to obtain the Certification for Sustainable Tourism for Tour Operators (CST), achieving the highest level.
Wherever possible they use local suppliers and promote contact between tourists and locals. This provides vital resources for the local economy so other, more damaging industries are not necessary for local people to make a living. The company also promotes understanding and education wherever possible. They provide customers with advice on how best to protect the environment they are enjoying.

Day 1

Arrive in San José and travel to Los Santos where you will be staying in the Quetzal Paradise Lodge, known for arguably the most beautiful birds in the World.

Day 2

Wake early, breakfast at the lodge, and head out on a tour to see the breath-taking Resplendent Quetzal. This incredible bird plays important roles in various forms of Mesoamerican mythology and it truly does justice to its name. In the afternoon you will wander among the oak and cypress of the vast Los Quetzales National Park.

Day 3

On day three you will move on to the verdant and steamy El Copal Reserve near Turrialba and Tapantí National Park. Enjoy a hearty lunch of local produce before heading out into the reserve (described by visitors as “a birder’s paradise!”). In the evening you can learn about El Copal’s conservation association over a dinner of more delicious local food.

Day 4

Wake up early for a tall canopy forest hike with a guide. Start your day with unforgettable views. As your stomach starts rumbling, you will head to breakfast, prepared by the wonderful Dona Patricia. Continue your morning birding in the surrounding area. Lunch at midday and head back into the extensive forest. You will also have the option to head to Guayabo National Monument of pre-Columbian ruins.

Day 5

Day five will be a day of travelling toward the Southern Caribbean Coast. You will travel to Languna Madre de Dios, one of the only nesting sites of the Agami Agami, a beautiful heron. With its starling deep turquoise plumage splashed with crimson, and a neck delicately laced with white, this bird is a remarkable sight. Continue on to the Casa Calateas on the Caribbean coast. Here, between October and December, you can observe the spring raptor migration.

Day 6

Move on to the coastal Cahuita National Park. Here you can continue your search for the incredible terrestrial wildlife or take a snorkeling tour of the reef where you can find light yellow brain, elkhorn, and blue staghorn corals, sea fans, and gorgonians as well as more than 500 species of fish.

Day 8

Head home or continue your travels
