The detail

"A four-night working holiday spent helping to protect Cornwall's stunning coastline."

Help preserve some of Britain's most beautiful beaches on this relaxing, eco-conscious project! The stunning beaches along Cornwall's South West Coast Path are awash with magnificent wildlife; on shore, proud peregrine falcons swoop by, while off-shore creatures such as sea birds, dolphins and summer basking sharks all call these waters along the coast 'home'. Heather moorlands and ancient woods also line the splendid coast path, which even passes near a UNESCO protected World Heritage estuary in North Devon. However, these marine habitats are vulnerable to pollution, with marine debris representing a threat to the natural beauty of this area.

Moving from beach to beach, you will be on the search for seashells, seaweed and debris, studying what washes up on the shores before recording your findings to be passed on to the Natural History Museum (NHM) and the Marine Conservation Society (MCS). You'll be doing this meaningful conservation work with like-minded volunteers while staying in comfortable lodging. Also expect to visit the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, admire well-known contemporary art at an outpost of the Tate Gallery in St Ives, and go on whirlpool rambles!

Wild Days Conservation has long sought to utilise the collective effort of eco-conscious individuals to positively affect British wildlife. This involves gathering volunteers to spend their holidays improving Britains' most beautiful natural areas and protecting their inhabitants. Wild Days Conservation provide expert knowledge of conservation issues, allowing volunteers to develop a more profound understanding of the challenges presented by field conservation. All those who participate are guaranteed to get hands on with important conservation work, sight-see in Britains' most scenic locations while enjoying comfortable accommodation and hearty meals.

Working in partnership with the NHM you will be conducting detailed surveys along the South-West Coast's beaches, identifying the type and extent of certain debris that has washed up on shore; this information will determine patterns and help formulate the environmental policy of local government. Wild Days Conservation also works alongside the MCS's 'Beachwatch' campaign, surveying defined 100 metre section of beaches and removing debris when warranted. The information you gather on your surveys will all go towards informing marine conservation practices in the area and help to preserve Cornwall's most beautiful beaches!
