The detail

"Educate and be educated as you volunteer and live on the outskirts of a 130 million year-old virgin rainforest, welcome to jungle school!"

For many of the children of the Batek people native to the Merapoh area, an official education is something they can only dream of. Lacking any basic education and with parents who haven’t been formally educated, by the time the children go to school they are often bullied because they are so far behind. You can help to fill this gap and provide the Batek children with enough basic skills to help them make the progression into formal, governmental education.

As a volunteer on this project, you will lead 3-hour lessons on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, covering topics such as basic English and Maths in the 'Bamboo School'. In a fortnightly ‘Jungle School’ session, a village elder will teach the children ancient skills such as fishing, tracking animals, making fire and building shelters. During your stay you will also get the chance to spot nocturnal wildlife on a thrilling night-drive, explore fascinating limestone caves, sample delicious cuisine at local night-markets and even spend the night in the jungle with the Batek ladies! Last but not least, to round up your cultural experience you'll also join a local family for a typical Malay dinner!

The Batek tribe are the local ‘Orang Asli’ (or ‘original people’) in the Merapoh region. The majority of these indigenous people live at least part of their lives within the rainforest. Many of the adults have not been exposed to formal education and, as such, many of the Batek children also miss out. The Batek Education Project works in partnership with local parents and the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA), to benefit the interests of the Batek children and people as a whole. The project started in Merapoh in 2013, and since then has established and maintained a fruitful and friendly relationship with the Batek people.

By providing basic education to the children of the Batek tribe, the project will give children a head-start, equipping them with the skills to gain future employment in areas such as forest guiding, farming, or the collection of forest products. Even if the children participating in the Batek Education Project do not go on to receive a formal, official education, they will have gained invaluable communication and jungle survival skills. The traditional rainforest skills sessions, led by village elders, also allow for the conservation and retention of the ancient knowledge and culture of the Batek people, by facilitating the ‘passing on’ of traditional forest craft skills.
