Depending on what time you arrive, you may have time to explore Quito and the surrounding area.
Quito is the largest and best preserved city in the Americas and in 1978 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Indeed, this city is utterly fascinating. It is considered the cultural capital of South America as well as the second most important city of the old Inca Empire. Day trips from here include a trip to the equator line, Mindo Cloud forest, Cotopaxi national park, Quilotoa crater lake, Otavalo indian market, Papallacta hot springs, Pululahua inhabitant crater and many more. Ask us if you want help to organise something.
Today you will leave Quito and head out across the eastern range of the Andes. This drive will give you some incredible views of Ecuador’s landscape including high volcanoes and verdant, cloud forest. On the journey you will stop at The Hummingbird Reserve. Watch and take photos of these sparkling, enchanting little creatures, while drinking delicious local coffee. From there, you will head onwards to the Amazon Basin and take a hike into a canyon right at the heart of the Llanganates National Park.
In the evening you will meet your family and settle into your homestay.
This will be your real induction to local Amazon life. You will see how your hosts utilize the jungle for food and medicine. You will hike through the forest with your guide, collecting plants and learning to weave with vines.
Today you will head out on an hour hike to Wuaysayacu. This is a stunning group of lagoons and waterfalls where you can swim and explore the area of pristine jungle.
In the afternoon, you will go panning for gold, and at night you will listen to stories in front of a bonfire.
Today is probably the best day to get to know your Amazonian family. You will learn more about their culture and traditions. You will be a part of the preparation of their local beer Chicha.
This will begin in the morning, when you will go looking for roots and leaves for the preparation.
You will also see the traditional method to make chocolate out of cacao.
When night falls, you will enjoy local music, learn about celebrations, social activities, marriage customs, and mythical shamanism.
