Jan de Groot Penthouse
John O'Groats, United Kingdom, Northern Europe, Europe
"Explore Scotland's beautiful coastline and iconic John O'Groats from the eponymous Jan de Groot Penthouse."
Get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and find peace in the luxurious Jan de Groot Penthouse. Situated within the iconic Inn at John O'Groats, the penthouse's specially designed, extensive glass front panels provide access to breath-taking panoramic views, from dramatic forested cliffs to white sandy beaches. The penthouse is furnished with a freestanding brass bath and shower room for those wishing to warm up following a blustery coastal walk along Dunnet Head or St John’s Point.
Originally built in 1875, the Inn at John O’Groats offers a perfect blend of historic original features and modern-day decadence. The inn stands out strikingly against the beautiful natural landscape with its Balamory-coloured, Norse-style modern extension which has been added to the historic former inn. With 180-degree views of Pentland Firth, you can enjoy panoramas of the Scottish north-eastern coast, famous for its sandstone cliffs and seal colonies. A stay at the Jan de Groot Penthouse is the chance to enjoy the perfect day; take a tour of the Orkney Islands before soaking in the brass tub, collapsing into a luxurious double bed and waking to a stunning view of the Pentland Firth.
Natural Retreats pride themselves on offering the balance between luxury and sustainability. Each of their properties is developed to fit in with both the surrounding natural landscape and ecological constraints. Using clever design, each property also attempts to maximise natural light and warmth in order to minimise energy consumption. Each of Natural Retreats' destinations offers local produce on the doorstep, as well as locally sourced furniture and fittings, in order to support local communities and economies.
The Natural Retreats residences are constructed (in part) using Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) sourced timber, meaning the use of concrete is minimal. They also have selected a super-efficient dual rate domestic hot water and heating system, which is able to utilise the extra heat from gases that would otherwise be wasted. Furthermore, to meet the company’s energy efficiency targets, each development is insulated to a higher standard than current building regulations. Currently, the practice is to use reconstituted glass fibre for wall cavity insulation. It is generally regarded to be next to sheep’s wool in thermal capacity!
