Since its inception in 1985, sustainability has always been a top priority at Finca Rosa Blanca. Right from the offset, the goal was to operate in as eco-friendly and sustainable a way as any small eco-hotel could, and to have a minimal environmental impact. The lodge was Costa Rica’s first certified sustainable hotel and over the last 20 years, has developed to become the highest ranking member of Costa Rica’s ‘Certification for Sustainable Tourism’ (CST) programme. Finca Rosa Blanca aims to prove that a boutique hotel can put sustainability to the forefront, focusing on environmental conservation, community development, and education, without economising on luxury.
Sustainability best practices weave their way seamlessly through Finca Rosa Blanca’s operations and day-to-day management: solar panels coupled with energy-saving auxiliary systems are used to heat water, coffee ‘pulp’ is recycled to be used as fertiliser, and recycled materials have been used throughout the property. As well as an ambitious recycling plan, the lodge also has a strong sense of its social responsibility; all of Finca Rosa Blanca’s employees are from the local area, allowing income generated as a result of eco-tourism to benefit local economies, and staff (as well as guests) are educated about environmental best practices. In recognition of its excellent commitment to sustainable tourism, Finca Rosa Blanca has been awarded the maximum possible five ‘green leaves’ by the Costa Rican Tourist Board.
