Discover Costa Rica’s sandy beaches and wild rainforests, and get the best of both worlds with a stay at the fantastic Arenas del Mar, an extraordinary resort that offers far more than your typical luxury hotel experience. Situated within walking distance of the wonderful Manuel Antonio National Park, this lodge’s unique geographical location makes it the perfect place for seasoned travellers, birdwatchers, nature-lovers and wildlife fanatics alike. Arenas del Mar boasts its own private natural reserve, home to over 160 bird species including toucans, hummingbirds and motmots, to name but a few!
This carbon-neutral property offers the ultimate in sustainable and luxurious lodging. Guests can enjoy breath-taking views from their own private deck, and, as well as intimate access to the rainforest, are ideally placed for exploration of two beautifully secluded nearby beaches. Arenas del Mar itself nestles within 11 acres of rainforest simply bursting with wildlife, and the hotel’s resident expert naturalists are always on hand to answer any questions guests might have about the flora and fauna that surrounds them. If guests want to venture further afield, the Manuel Antonio area has plenty to offer including kayaking, zip-lining, white-water rafting and horseback riding. What more could you want?
Inspired by their stunning natural surroundings, Arenas del Mar’s management are committed to proving that a world-class resort can operate in an entirely carbon-neutral way whilst also maintaining rigorous standards in environmental stewardship, sustainability and social responsibility. A member of the Cayuga Collection of Sustainable Luxury Hotels and Lodges, Arenas del Mar’s dedication to sustainability in tourism has been recognised by the Costa Rican Tourism Board’s ‘Certification for Sustainable Tourism’ programme. Using the following criteria: ‘sustainable models of natural, cultural and social resource management’, the lodge was awarded five out of a possible five ‘leaves’ in acknowledgement of its pioneering initiatives in sustainable hospitality.
Ever since its inception in 2006, strict measures have been taken to ensure that Arenas del Mar meets the highest possible standards in sustainability. The lodge’s sustainable features are too numerous to list exhaustively, but here are just a few highlights… Extensive recycling facilities ensure minimal water wastage, and any water leaving the property is treated to prevent contamination of surrounding sources. To heat hot water for its guests, Arenas del Mar uses solar panels coupled with energy-saving auxiliary heaters, helping to minimise their carbon footprint. Recycled and natural materials (including roof tiles made from discarded plastic bags taken from the banana industry!) have been used throughout the property, allowing the lodge to integrate into the surrounding environment with a minimal visual and physical impact.
