"A mud farmhouse-turned boutique hotel situated in the charming Chinese village of Moon Hill."
Once upon a time, in the village of Moon Hill, there stood an abandoned old farm. In 2008, this was transformed into the luxury Yangshuo Village Inn, a boutique hotel set against a backdrop of ethereal limestone karst formations. A far cry from its previous days of a mud hut barn, it now houses 13 exclusive guestrooms, each decorated with stunning bamboo furniture and locally sourced antiques and artwork. Although the hotel has preserved the authentic architecture and design of its former days, this has not come at the cost of luxury: each room comes fully equipped with Western comforts, including heating, WiFi and luxury dining options.
Aside from admiring the fantastic mountain scenery around you, there is a lot to do in Moon Hill. For some outdoor adventure, cycle through the paddy fields or hop onto a bamboo raft along the River Li, which offers a less strenuous way to enjoy your surroundings. For the experimental traveller, the nearby caves are a must-see. Not only are they lit up by stunning multi-coloured lights, but they’re also home to mud baths where you can try out the messiest bath of your life – bring a spare swimsuit! Experiencing the local culture firsthand is a given here, whether it’s participating in a local festival, such as Fishing Lights Festival (when local fishing boots are decked out with lanterns and fireworks fill the sky), or trying out culinary specialties, like taro or their Pomelo grapefruit. For culture, adventure, history and beauty, the Yangshuo Inn is the ideal destination.
The Yangshuo Inn strives to promote sustainable tourism and preserve the beauty of Yangshuo for future tourists and locals alike. All the employees are locals from the surrounding villages, who are taught English and the necessary skills so that they can provide for their families and compete within the growing tourist trade in the area. To further support the locals, 5% of the hotel’s profits go straight back into the community, financing education initiatives.
This sustainable approach is also adopted in the day-to-day running of the Inn. Seemingly small things really make a difference! For example, all the guest room furniture is made from locally sourced bamboo, the floors are from EcoWood laminate and there are no disposable products in the hotel – even the shampoo bottles are ceramic and refillable! To save energy, water is heated using solar and they’ve stayed true to their farmhouse roots, by growing vegetables for the restaurant in an organic garden behind the farmhouse.
