Summary

Help to protect some of Malaysia’s most threatened jungle species, including tigers, leopards and elephants, on this important and adventurous conservation project. During your first week, you’ll join a team working on the outskirts of one of the oldest rainforests on the planet; the ancient Taman Negara jungle is thought to be over 130 million years old and is home to leopards, sun bears, elephants and Malayan tigers. Learn how to identify animal tracks as you trek through thick jungle, helping to deter poachers and spot traps. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit amazing limestone caves and join the indigenous Batek ladies on foraging walks. Get back to nature with an overnight jungle camp, and help run a Conservation English session for the local village children.

For the second and third weeks of the project, you’ll head to the Perhentian Islands, named by CNN in 2013 as the ‘number one beach location in Malaysia’, where you’ll volunteer to help conserve turtles. You’ll swim and snorkel in the sparkling seas, taking non-intrusive photos of turtles to contribute to important identification research. You’ll also help to guard the eggs of nesting turtles on the beaches at night, making sure that poachers can’t steal them. On this conservation project you’ll have the chance to explore some of the most beautiful parts of Malaysia whilst also learning about and helping to protect its fantastic wildlife.

What We Love

  • Pioneering Research and Conservation Work: Help to gather vital data by photographing sea turtles in the waters around the Perhentian Islands, and help to reduce poaching in the Taman Negara area. Contribute to research which will be important for conserving threatened tigers and turtles in the future.

  • Tiger Tracking: Learn how to spot animal tracks and signs, and watch as the forest reveals its hidden secrets. Follow in the footsteps of poachers and try to find their fatal snares so that the traps can be removed from the forest and one more Malayan tiger might be saved.

  • Rainforest Camp and Caving: Learn more about indigenous ways of life and enjoy the sounds of nature’s orchestra as you camp under the forest canopy with the Batek people. Visit the unique labyrinthine Merapoh caves and discover hidden waterfalls, rivers and cave drawings.
