"From jungle hikes to lounging on the beach: this tour offers the best of Southern Madagascar."
90% of the animals in Madagascar can be found nowhere else on our planet; for such a tiny island, Madagascar is a true hub of biodiversity, home to an incredible array of rare and exciting animals. With forests of Baobab trees that have learnt to live in droughts, luscious jungles and idyllic beaches, there’s a massive variety of different habitats to explore and this adventurous 12-day trip gives you a taster of all of them.
Experience the very best of Southern Madagascar, visiting three of its most impressive National Parks: Antisrabe, Ranomfana and Isalo. As you journey through them, you’ll come across all manner of creatures from tiny frogs to leaping lemurs. Swim in natural jungle pools, explore private nature reserves behind your hotel, chill on the coast of the Indian Ocean and witness the mind-boggling ‘Spiny Forest’ in Ifaty. If you’re looking to discover totally unique landscapes whilst getting in touch with Madagascar’s fascinating wildlife, then this is the ideal adventure for you.
The forests of Madagascar are home to a huge variety of wildlife and 90% of these creatures are found exclusively on the island. This means that threats such as deforestation pose a huge risk, as if these habitats are destroyed, the unique species will also be lost forever. To combat this danger, Pioneer Expeditions is hugely committed to conserving the rainforest and works to support reforestation efforts and since 2008, they have has planted over 500,000 trees. On top of this Pioneer Expeditions also funds a tree nursery in Italavina. If you're interested in getting more involved, you can add it to your itinerary for a visit or even spend time volunteering there.
Pioneer Expeditions supports the local community by only hiring local guides and bringing custom to local restaurants and businesses that may not always benefit from the typical tourist trails. This not only helps support the local communities economically, but also ensures that you get a truly authentic experience, as it is the locals who know the areas best.
Tana Trip Begins: The plane may say Antananarivo, but all the locals call it Tana. You’ll be met when you land and transferred to the hotel to settle in for your first night in Madagascar.
Adventure and Exploration: The next two days will be spent exploring the Andasibe National Park, which is home to a lemur species called Indri (you might recognise them as the stars of Attenborough's Planet Earth II). This will be an animal-packed few days, as there’s also a visit to a farm specialising in Madagascan reptiles and butterflies and the hotel has its own private reserve. Watch out for the croc whilst you explore it! In the evening, take the opportunity to see some nocturnal animals with a twilight walk.
Seeing Local Life: There’s a long day of driving ahead of you to reach Antisrabe, a peaceful little town where you can also visit a stone cutting workshop.
Thermal Vibes: After an early breakfast, head to Ranomanfana National Park, which is about a 4 hour journey. You’ll be staying just 10 minutes away from the park, meaning it’s quick and easy to reach the next morning. Once you get there, visit the thermal baths for a relaxing afternoon soak.
Roaming in Ranomfana: Spend the day exploring the National Park with a full-day trek – keep your eyes peeled for all the lemurs on the way!
Crazy Creatures: It’s time to transfer to Isalo National Park, which is home to some incredible and rare animals, such as the Malagasy rainbow frog and 6 different types of lemurs! Take a dip in the beautiful natural pools – the perfect way to cool off after spotting amazing animals.
Paradise Lost: It’s time for a change of scenery as you head up to Ifaty, an idyllic coastal paradise. There might also be time to stop off at Zombitse National Park on the way.
Explore Ifaty: As well as stunning beaches, Ifaty is also home to the ‘Spiny Forest’ in the Reniala Nature Reserve. There is an optional extra to visit this forest of drought resistant trees, which is a must-see for birdwatchers and botanical enthusiasts, as its home to Baobab trees and a huge range of interesting birds. Add a sense of adventure, by travelling in a pirogue – a traditional fishing boat.
Hit the Skies: After some long car journeys, it’s time to take to the skies with a flight from Tulear back to Tana, where you can explore the local markets on your returns and get a taste of the capital city’s lifestyle.
Heading Home: It’s time to wave goodbye to Madagascar and catch your flight back to reality. Unless you’d rather postpone it for a while, in which case you can add a beach extension to your tour.
