This comprehensive tour of Costa Rica will cover many of its most famous natural wonders: journey from the diverse Sarapiqui rainforests, to the canals of Tortuguero, through the dream-like Monteverde Cloud Forest, and end up in the otherworldly, volcanic Rincon de la Vieja region. Adventure abounds on this tour, with rafting, zip-lining, horseback riding and diving activities readily available at most of the locations. Nature-lovers are catered for too, with an embarrassment of riches in terms of wildlife – this is Costa Rica we're talking about here! Arrival: Touch down in Liberia, the sunny rural capital of Guanacaste.
Liberia – La Fortuna: Depart to the town of La Fortuna, the closest town to the Arenal Volcano area. The town is also home to the famous Fortuna Falls, a magnificent cascading waterfall hidden in a dense forest. You'll be staying at an elegant hotel where you can relax and enjoy the facilities, before the great adventure that awaits you.
Optional activities and Arenal Volcano: After a day of leisure you'll be free to participate in optional activities such as visiting the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge, a tour where you'll enjoy an informative boat journey through the rainforest and marshlands. Additionally, you'll visit the nearby Arenal Volcano, a towering 1, 670 metre active volcano that imposes itself impressively on the region – or you could take a leisurely dip in the local hot springs! You could even go for a spot of horseback riding, taking in the beautiful vistas as you ride.
Morning departure to Sarapiqui: You'll have the entire afternoon at your leisure to explore the richly bio-diverse region of Sarapiqui, an area known for being an adventurer's dream destination! Here you can hop on boat and rafting tours, or go horseback riding to spot the region’s varied wildlife, which includes monkeys, birds turtles and caimans. If that doesn't quench your thirst for wildlife then you can go on an excursion to a local butterfly or frog farm!
Sarapiqui – Tortuguero: As a glorious dawn breaks, traverse the Caribbean lowlands and board a boat that will ferry you along a canal that runs parallel to the Caribbean Coast. Visit the Tortuguero National Park as your last port of call on this boat ride, which is an absolute haven for wildlife. Here, canopy trees exceed 60 metres in height and are home to a wide diversity of species.
Tortuguero Canals: Glide along the canals of Tortuguero, spotting the various species that reside here, including 57 species of amphibians and 300 species of bird. Bird-watchers among you are sure to love this day and should ensure you bring along your binoculars to glance upon the green and great blue herons, egrets, belted kingfishers, jacanas and hawks that may flutter by! In the afternoon be sure to check out the Turtle Museum and explore the picturesque Tortuguero village.
Tortuguero – San Jose: After a hearty breakfast, return by boat to the pier and then travel across to the capital city of San Jose. San Jose is a city of subtle charm, replete with modern art galleries, restaurants and boutique hotels lying in its old-fashioned colonial quarters; here you can visit the grand National Theatre, peruse museums full of gold and jade, or dance the night away at one of the city's bouncing night clubs!
San Jose - Manuel Antonio: Depart San Jose on a three and half hour trip to Quepos and Manuel Antonio on the Central Pacific Coast. Manuel Antonio is renowned for being a jewel of Costa Rica's Pacific Coast and its marvellous landscapes feature a unique mix of rainforests, gorgeous white sand beaches, blue lagoons and vast mangroves.
Leisure day at Manuel Antonio Park: This Park is home to over 180 bird and 100 mammal species, and is one of the few places on Earth you can see a spider or howler monkey! Take in the bountiful bio-diversity of this wonderful park as you take a rafting or boating tour, or perhaps a guided walking tour.
Monteverde area: Have another day of leisurely exploration, in the beauteous Monteverde region, and find out why it has been described as one of the 'Seven Natural Wonders of Costa Rica'.
This is a free day for optional activities in the Monteverde Reserve where you can fully understand and explore the wealth of visual treats this area has to offer! There is a Sky Trek and Sky Walk, which will propel you to the highest point in the Arenal Reserve, far above the spectacular canopies of the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Then, after you've taken in the sights, hop onto a zip-line and hurtle down two miles of cable to the ground level! There are additional canopy tours and guided walks that are highly recommended once you come back to earth.
Monteverde – Rinco de la Vieja National Park: Venture on to the Rincon de la Vieja National Park, located in the northernmost region of the Guanacaste Province and one of the most frequented regions in the country. This area is popular with tourists for good reason; its stunning landscape includes tropical dry forests, mesmerising waterfalls, bubbling mud pots, hot springs and steaming vents!
Day of leisure at the Rincon de la Vieja volcano area: Made up of nine adjacvent craters, the Rincon de la Vieja volcano area truly is one of the most unique regions on the planet. The area is also home to a rich tapestry of wildlife including white-faced, spider and howler monkeys. You'll have a full day to delve into this gift from nature, with guided walks, zip-line and rafting tours all available, if you fancy raising the adrenaline levels while you explore!
