“Help to protect one of the world’s most formidable and misunderstood predators as a shark conservation volunteer in South Africa.”
Go where others don’t dare, and plunge into a specially designed cage to get up-close and personal with great white sharks in their natural habitat. This incredible project works to protect this vulnerable species through ecotourism and conservation efforts, showing tourists the importance of great white sharks and breaking down preconceptions about their behaviours. As a volunteer, you’ll raise awareness about shark conservation issues, and help researchers collect data that will help them better understand the species. While this project is not for the faint hearted, for those that do choose to embark on this adrenaline-pumping adventure the experience will provide a lifetime of memories.

The great white shark has endured the most negative media publicity for years, causing this beautiful creature to become one of the most hated species on the planet. Unsustainable fishing practices, poaching, and ecological degradation has meant that certain shark species have experienced population declines of over 90% in the last 35 years, and the great white shark specifically is classed as ‘vulnerable’. This project, founded in 1989, is a world-leading organisation dedicated to promoting shark ecotourism. It aims to educate as many people as possible to help conserve the species, working closely with local communities to protect the delicate marine life.
During this experience, volunteers collaborate with researchers to collect data on the sharks, as this is the best way to help conservation efforts. Despite their fearsome reputation, little is actually known about the great white shark’s biology and behaviour. Therefore, to better understand these animals, it is important gather as much data as possible, by recording their behaviour, size, gender and appearance. Finally, volunteers also work closely with the local communities to help clean up the beaches of rubbish and recyclable material.
The Adventure Begins: After arriving into South Africa via Cape Town International Airport, you will spend the first night at The Atlantic Point Hostel.
Travel to Kleinbaai: You will be met by a project representative who will help you transfer to the project site in Kleinbaai. Go out on the boat for your first taste of shark-spotting! Later, return to the project site and spend the rest of the day settling in and meeting the other volunteers.
Project Days: The volunteer programme is mainly focused on this great white shark ecotourism, and so you’ll take regular trips out to sea to view and go cage-diving with the sharks. You’ll also help to educate regular cage-diving clients about great white shark conservation. When the weather isn’t your friend, you’ll instead be taken on exciting excursions, including visits to the penguins at Boulders Beach! You’ll also get a chance to help out at the ‘Swop Shop’ on Tuesdays, helping to promote recycling and environmental awareness amongst local children.
Final Day: Return to Cape Town and transfer to the airport, or begin your independent travel plans.
