“Sled through snow-covered Finland with Huskies, track wolves in the wild, and experience the magic of the Northern Lights…”
Wild and untamed, Finland is home to some of the planet’s most incredible wildlife, and is also renowned for acting as the stage for nature’s most mystical light show - Aurora Borealis. On this week-long tour, you’ll explore some of Finland’s most beautiful scenery, travelling through snow-covered taiga landscapes and dense boreal forests to seek out elusive predators like wolverines and wolves. Spend a night in a wildlife-watching hide, take an exhilarating Husky sled tour through the wilderness, and, weather permitting, witness the splendour of the Northern Lights from a rustic lakeside cabin.
This tour provides the ultimate Finnish adventure, with lots of activities packed into just one week. On any one day, you could be learning to track wolves with the help of an expert guide, snowshoeing through the forest, or spotting wild reindeer roaming through the woods. You’ll make some unexpected friends too – the Huskies! These stunning animals will be your canine companions for the week, as you travel by Husky sled through magical snowy forests. At the end of each day’s adventure, return to your accommodation for a relaxing dip in a traditional wood-fired sauna. As darkness falls, it’s time for the show to start, as you eagerly await the appearance of the mystical Northern Lights…

The Finland Husky Safari and The Aurora Borealis tour runs with a small, fixed group size, meaning that minimal pressure is put on the natural environments visited during the trip. As with any ecotourism trip, education is a big part of the tour, with expert guides on hand to share information about Finland’s wildlife and how it can best be protected. Participants are even given the chance to help maintain bird habitats in the forest, bringing direct benefit to species in the area while also allowing travellers to learn and develop new skills.
Touch down at Kajaani airport, and transfer to your hotel in Kuhmo. After check-in, settle in to your room and enjoy your first evening meal at the hotel. Be sure to get plenty of rest ready for the start of your adventure!
After breakfast, change into some warm winter clothes and head out for a day in the Finnish wilderness. You’ll be picked up and taken to an area where wild animals are known to have been in the last few days. Accompanied by a guide, you’ll track animals like wolverines, reindeer and even wolves. Using a snowmobile sledge and snowshoes, you’ll be able to get right to the heart of the forest. Break for lunch around the campfire, before returning to the hotel for dinner and a good night’s rest.
Today you’ll visit the Petola Wildlife Centre, where you’ll meet your guide and learn more about the area’s wonderful wildlife. Next, continue to the Boreal Wildlife Centre, positioned near the border with Russia. Spend some time in viewing hides, looking out for predators like wolves, eagles and wolverines, and try to capture some photographs. After lunch and some more wildlife-watching, you’ll return to the Centre for dinner, a dip in the sauna, and some well-earned sleep.
Leave the Wildlife Centre after breakfast and return to your hotel. The rest of the day is all about relaxation and ‘you’-time: head out to explore the local village, soak in the sauna, or discover Kuhmo. The choice is yours! Return to the hotel for dinner.
Set out for one of the most thrilling parts of the trip – your first Husky sled ride! Travel to the lakeside cabin (your home for two nights), monitoring and tracking wildlife along the way. Journey through dense forests and snowy taiga landscapes, stopping to inspect tracks more closely when necessary. Arrive at the cabin in the evening and help tend to the dogs before enjoying a soak in the wood-heated traditional sauna and a hearty meal. As darkness falls (and if the weather is clear), head down to the lake for some star-gazing – if you’re very lucky, you might even catch your first glimpse of the Northern Lights!
Begin the day with another husky sled trip, following a private trail towards the Pahavaara Nature Protection Area. Keep an eye out for wild forest reindeer, flying squirrels, and even elusive wolves… During your journey, you may get the opportunity to hop off to lend a hand with maintaining some bird habitats in the area. After a full day’s adventure, return to the cabin for dinner and a dip in the sauna. Settle down with a good book, and listen to the singing of the Huskies as they communicate with their distant and wild cousins – the wolves…
Bid your cabin home a fond farewell as you prepare for one final sled ride with your new friends, the Huskies. The dogs will return to you to your hotel, where you’ll spend the remainder of the day relaxing. Or, if you still have some energy left, head out for some last minute exploration of the area. Another tasty evening meal and sauna will leave you feeling refreshed, ready for tomorrow’s journey.
After breakfast, leave your quaint hotel and travel back to Kajaani airport. From here, board your return flight home or commence your onward travels, wherever they might take you!
