"The true essence of traditional safari, the chance to learn about the conservation efforts of elephants and giraffes, just a stones throw from beautiful Nairobi!"
An endangered Black rhino grazing peacefully in the shadow of a skyscraper is, at first, startling in its discordance. But for the residents of Nairobi, a city bordering a 12,000-hectare National park, this is an unremarkable sight. There are very few cities in the world that have such a harmonious relationship with wildlife and, although easily accessible from the city and its airports, the Nairobi National Park retains the soul of the African wilderness. Its sweeping plains, forests and valleys are home to a staggering selection of wildlife, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes and growing herds of Black and White rhino.
Nairobi Tented Camp, deep in the heart of this beautiful park and surrounded by iconic riverine forests, is the ideal base from which to explore this unique environment. The only accommodation available in the park itself, and offering ensuite facilities, traditional furnishings and gourmet meals crafted from the freshest ingredients, it is the perfect, luxury camping experience. Visitors to the camp have the opportunity to join unmissable game drives, meet the elephants at the park’s famous Elephant Orphanage or visit the Rothschild Giraffes and learn about their incredible conservation story at the Afew Giraffe Centre. With the possibility of going from plane to safari in just 30 minutes, the Nairobi Tented Camp is the ideal combination of accessibility and authenticity.
A fully mobile operation, the Nairobi Tented Camp is designed to have minimal impact on the local environment. With no permanent fixtures and fittings, the only items placed in the ground are the tent pegs. Following a strict eco-policy, their camp environmental management programme ensures a sustainable way of life. All waste water (including grey and black water from accommodation, mess areas and kitchen) are put through a Biobox treatment, a unique system that filters the water until it is safe to be returned to the ground - without using electricity. All other waste products are removed from the park where they are separated for recycling or safe disposal.
The Nairobi Tented Camp is passionate about retaining the peace and seclusion of the Kenyan bush. As such, except for a skeleton team, all staff are accommodated outside the National Park in an effort to reduce the disturbance a busy camp can bring. To retain all natural resources and leave undergrowth untouched, no wood is cut or used from the park and is all brought in from commercial forests. All tents have low watt LED lighting and run off rechargeable batteries or solar panels to reduce light pollution and candles or lanterns in outside spaces are a romantic lighting solution without disturbing local wildlife.
