The detail

Take a journey back in time to discover the real Romania, and get ‘back-to-basics’, on this cultural and experiential tour through the stunning Maramures region. Visiting remote locations and staying in traditional dwellings, you’ll be transported deep into the rural Romanian heartlands, where the rolling green countryside is peppered with quaint villages and beautiful wooden churches. Whether you’re looking to experience a unique way of life, gain an insight into another culture, or simply enjoy some peace and quiet in nature, rural Romania is the perfect place to enjoy an authentic and unforgettable holiday. Step back in time, to an age of rural values and romantic simplicity.

On this culturally immersive tour, you’ll stay amongst local people in simple guesthouses, and get the opportunity to learn typical Maramures skills and crafts including jam-making, buffalo herding, hay-stacking, berry picking and pottery making. You’ll learn about the history of communism in Romania, gain a fresh perspective at the charming Merry Cemetery, and admire the region’s famous wooden churches (including the world’s tallest!) Of course, you’ll also have plenty of time to appreciate your stunning natural surroundings as you enjoy a slower pace of living. This fairy-tale break will leave you feeling refreshed and revived, and will remind you of the importance of the simple things in life.

This tour focuses on rural Romanian culture, customs and traditions. Through giving travellers the chance to explore lesser-known regions, Untravelled Paths allows local people and tourists to enjoy a ‘cultural exchange’, learning from each other and enriching each other’s understanding and appreciation. This Rural Romania Experience gives travellers the chance to stay in typical guesthouses owned and run by local people. This means that tourists get a more insightful and immersive experience of the area they are visiting, and also provides local communities with a valuable source of income and jobs, helping to bolster the rural economies.

On many of their tours, Untravelled Paths encourages travellers to ‘live like the locals’, by getting involved in traditional rural activities and past-times including berry-picking, jam-making, weaving and wood-carving. This both enriches the tourist’s experience, gives them new skills, and also means that age-old customs can be passed on and protected. Conserving and appreciating Romania’s natural beauty is another important part of this experiential tour. Travellers have the opportunity to take enriching nature walks in the countryside in a low-impact manner, and eat fresh and organic food for the duration of the tour. This tour provides an excellent opportunity for travellers to get to know Romania’s rural side, whilst also benefiting local communities.
