The detail

Guatemala is known for its incredible diversity of life, and is home to some of the most fascinating species on the planet, including the macaw, spider monkey, howler monkey, ocelot, coatimundi, anteater, margay and jaguar. Sadly, this amount of diversity is too tempting for some and many animals fall victim to poachers or are lost to the illegal pet trade, while many more are struggling to survive in the face of deforestation and increased exposure to foreign pathogens.

Tucked away in the remote, northern region of Guatemala, the Guatemala Wild Animal Rescue Centre is a lifeline for wildlife caught up in this vicious human- animal conflict. Set in 45 hectares of forested land in the Mayan Biosphere Reserve, the centre rescues, supports and rehabilitates malnourished and traumatised animals. This project gives you the chance to work with some unique wildlife species, assisting with their daily care, undertaking research and, eventually, witnessing their release. On an average day you could be cleaning cages, comforting a baby monkey struggling to cope with separation from its mother, lending a hand in the quarantine clinic, or participating in community educational projects. Eye-opening, inspiring, and truly rewarding, this is an experience that will never be forgotten.

Based in the Guatemalan jungle, this project is a crucial element in the process of wildlife rehabilitation and rescue. Guatemala is home to an incredibly varied number of species, many of which are caught in a constant battle with humans. Poaching, an illegal pet trade, extensive deforestation and an increased exposure to foreign pathogens leaves many animals malnourished, sick or traumatised by the treatment of poachers and traffickers. As their habitats shrink and their demand rises, rehabilitation into a safe environment can be their only hope of survival.

The centre works diligently to achieve rehabilitation on both a long and short term basis. Animal health is always the priority and recently seized animals are given immediate medical attention and a carefully calculated diet in order to regain physical fitness. They are then closely monitored to ascertain whether they have the skills required to survive in the wild and, if so, they are eventually released. The process is continually evolving and researchers are always on site to ensure greater rehabilitation success and to educate local communities on crucial environmental conservation. Although successful rehabilitation is always the end goal, some animals that are too dependent on humans (e.g. ex-pets or animals with long term health conditions) can never be released and the centre provides a much needed alternative home.
