The detail

"Make those holiday shots count by helping conservationists. Gain real conservation experience and in your time off visit the other-worldy formations of Mount Teide National Park!"

Help to protect threatened whale and dolphin populations and gain invaluable conservation experience as you volunteer on the stunning island of Tenerife. The largest and most bio-diverse of the seven Canary Islands, Tenerife is one of the world’s best whale and dolphin watching destinations with its south-west coast providing a home to communities of these majestic and captivating cetaceans all year round. You’ll help to complete visual surveys three to five times a week, going out on boats to undertake crucial observation work. You will also act as a guide for tourists on whale-watching excursions, where you will use the knowledge you’ve gained to educate and inform them about the whale and dolphin populations they might spot, as well as other migratory species such as killer or blue whales.

You’re sure to have a ‘whale’ of a time on the Island, which boasts sandy beaches, two world heritage sites and a volcano (no big deal). Explore quaint Renaissance towns, old churches and medieval castles, or take some salsa or windsurfing lessons. There is also some fantastic scuba-diving to be done on the island as well as plenty of beautiful natural landscapes to see, some of which you might recognise from films such as Clash of the Titans and Star Wars. The force 'whale' be with you, always.

The Canary Islands are a whale-watching hotspot, with approximately 500,000 tourists visiting the area each year to try and sight the charismatic cetaceans. Whales and dolphins have been around the waters of the Canary Islands for millions of years, and if we want these beautiful creatures to exist for another million years, conservation projects like this one are vital. Marine animals are currently facing numerous threats: commercialised fishing equipment and ships can cause injury, overfishing means less food and waters are becoming increasingly polluted. Key populations in the region need to be protected from these threats, which is where volunteers come in.

Volunteers on this conservation project take photos of whales and dolphins to help researchers understand how they interact with each other, and also to assess population growth. Identifying individuals by recognising natural marks on fins will mean that researchers can add to their digital catalogue of known individuals, helping to understand the populations in the area. Baseline data that volunteers help to collect will also contribute towards the creation of a long-term management plan for the area, and will also promote marine conservation in the Mediterranean. Finally, volunteers themselves will gain practical conservation experience, and will be able to pass on this knowledge to promote conservation worldwide!
