"Trek the wild's of gorilla territory, feast on local cuisine, and refresh yourself by Lake Bunyonyi!"

It is a rare opportunity to witness the likes of chimpanzees and gorillas whilst they roam about in their natural habitats. The chance to become a fly-on-the-wall as you observe such striking primates, camouflaged to become part of their world, is an extraordinarily unique experience. The Uganda Great Apes Adventure will give you the rare opportunity to observe these great creatures at their ease and in a natural setting, as you trek some of the most spectacular landscapes of Uganda. You will be left agape as you witness the chimps swinging from tree to tree 'Tarzan style' above your very own head!

Make sure you are well equipped for long hikes and steep hills as some of the excursions can get a bit rough. When you’re not busy spying on the fascinating lives of these gorgeous primates, take the time to soak up the beauty of wild Uganda; breathe in the fresh forest air as you listen to the rustling sounds of animals moving through the bush. To gather your strength for the trekking, be a little bold and sample some of the local cuisine! Africa has so many dishes that are filled with delicate spices, ensuring that you will discover some delicious new flavours. Most importantly, put on your exploring cap and relish in this true African extravaganza!

The incredible story of the critically endangered mountain gorilla is testament to the power of conservation and, more specifically, ecotourism. Mountain gorillas are found in just three central African countries: Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. As a result of wars, poaching, and forest habitat loss in these countries, mountain gorilla populations sharply declined - just ten years ago their numbers were as low as 400, and the fate of these great apes looked bleak. Over the last ten years, though, there’s been a significant turnaround for mountain gorillas, with conservation efforts helping to boost numbers to over 800, as they stand today.

Ecotourism has played an important part in helping to bring Mountain Gorillas back from the brink of extinction, with the money made through gorilla tourism used to support conservation efforts. For example, funds generated through the cost of gorilla trekking permits have helped to provide funds for anti-poaching patrols, to support local communities, and to improve park infrastructure. By booking a gorilla trekking tour, travellers are able to directly contribute to the protection of mountain gorillas, whilst also experiencing one of the world’s most unique and memorable wildlife encounters! The future of mountain gorillas is intrinsically linked to ecotourism - neither can survive without the other.

Day 1

Arriving: You will land at Entebbe International Airport before meeting with your tour guide. You will then be transferred to your hotel in Kampala. Get ready for a gorgeous dinner prepared at the City Blue and rest up for the exciting travels which lay ahead.

Day 2

Gorillas Galore: Rise and shine! You will wake at the early hour of 7am, and grab a quick bite to eat before setting off to the Kibale Forest National Park in western Uganda. Enjoy the epic trail as you move through a region containing the highest populous of gorillas in the country. You will then spend the night at the wonderful Primate Lodge.

Day 3

The Bigodi Wetlands: Join forces with other travellers as you embark on another exciting day at the Kibale Forest. This time, keep an eye out for the chimpanzees. Don’t be surprised if they scream and hoot loudly to each other as they swing from tree to tree Tarzan style! You will then have a spot of lunch before a pleasant walk through the Bigodi wetlands. Here you will get to see several species of monkeys, birds, colourful butterflies, and an array of plant life.

Day 4

Bwindi National Park: After travelling to southwestern Uganda, you will be checked into the comfortable Haven Lodge near the Bwindi National Park. Enjoy the incredible scenery of the lush forests which engulf the landscape, surrounding your accommodation. Take the day to relax and absorb the incredible memories you will have already made.

Day 5

Chilling by the Lake: After a quick briefing on gorilla tracking etiquette, you will be transferred to the Bwindi Forest and assigned to your group for the day. This will be a tough trek, so be prepared to do some serious hiking. You'll probably find that the gorillas aren’t as physically active as the chimps are. But don’t worry! This means you’ll get to relax as you observe them in their natural habitat. You will then be driven over to Lake Bunyonyi for some ultimate relaxation. Who needs a spa hotel when you can watch over the calm blue waters of Bunyonyi? Your evening will be spent at the lovely Arcadia Cottages.

Day 6

Goodbye: Once you have finished your final meal, you will travel to the airport for your evening flight home. The transfer is a fairly long ride, so there will be plenty of stops for food, including in the pleasant spot of Mbarara, where you will get lunch and take a quick detour to the Equator to round off the perfect trip!
