The detail

"Learn in completely luxury. Be guided through Tsavo East National Park, and Watamu Marine Park then relax by the pool and watch the sun set!"

Turtle Bay Beach Club, named for the Sea turtles that breed nearby, is a three-star hotel situated on a stretch of beach on the edge of arguably Kenya’s best National Marine Park. The internationally acclaimed Watamu National Marine Park is one of the world’s most pristine underwater reserves, providing the perfect setting for a Kenyan eco-holiday. The hotel buildings are located within 10 acres of beautifully landscaped tropical gardens with three restaurants, bars and a swimming pool. There are a variety of tastefully furnished rooms ranging from Swahili style units with ocean views to beach-front rooms.

The hotel’s onsite Dive Centre gives guests immediate and intimate access to the Watamu Marine Park which, as a protected area, is a breeding ground for an array of marine life. Within the reserve it is not uncommon to spot Whale sharks, dolphins, Manta rays and, of course, turtles. Visit the strange landscape of ‘Hell’s Kitchen’, Kenya’s answer to the Grand Canyon and discover the rare wildlife of Arabuko-Sokoke Forest at the Kipepeo Butterfly Project. Of course, no trip to Kenya would be complete without a safari; discover the region’s iconic wildlife for yourself on a guided safari, with the chance to spot elephants, giraffes, buffalos, Sable antelopes and Colobus monkeys and more as well as an assortment of birdlife and pre-historic flora.

Turtle Bay Beach Club’s appeal lies in its location, with spectacular marine life right on the doorstep. Should the environment and the area’s wildlife be lost or damaged, Turtle Bay Beach Club would undoubtedly suffer. The Club therefore makes every effort to prioritise conservation and community work, ensuring the longevity not just of wildlife, habitats, and communities, but also ensuring its own survival. In 1998, the hotel established a ‘community and conservation office’ charged with looking at environmental and community issues. This office, and the work it does, makes Turtle Bay Beach Club really stand out in terms of sustainability.

Over the 43 years the hotel has been in existence, it has been able to make a real positive impact in the community. Its office has developed policies and strategies that help the Club to effectively manage its natural resources and engage the local community. The hotel takes enormous pride in its work, supporting the conservation of Sea turtles and of the marine habitat as well as promoting local business, health programmes and community education. For instance, the hotel funds the education of 100 children with the support of its guests. In 2013 Turtle Bay Beach Club won the Lilizela Imvelo award in the ‘best social involvement’ category, and was the first hotel in Kenya to receive a ‘Gold’ eco-rating by Ecotourism.
