Transylvania, a region in central Romania, is famed for its Dracula connection. But there’s more to Transylvania than fang-toothed vampires and spooky gothic castles… A visit to this mysterious region is a visit to a bygone time, where rolling green fields are dotted with haystacks, villagers travel by horse and cart, and shepherds roam the countryside to tend their flocks. Transylvania’s medieval towns offer a fascinating insight into the history of the region, and are amongst Europe’s best-preserved. So forget the ghost stories, put aside the stereotypes, and get to know the real Romania with this week-long tour into the rural heart of Transylvania.
You’ll visit some of Transylvania’s best and most iconic locations, including three famous Saxon towns; admire Brasov’s fantastic baroque architecture, wander through the charming cobbled streets of Sibiu, and explore the labyrinthine passageways of Sighisoara’s hilltop citadel. You’ll also visit the legendary Bran Castle, better known as Dracula’s Castle, and the impressive Neo-Renaissance Peles Castle. Enjoy some leisurely hiking and biking in the woods, before spending some memorable time staying in local villages and getting involved in traditional activities including hay-stacking, bread-making and shepherding. Over the course of the week, you’ll quench your thirst for history, mystery, culture and nature, and return home refreshed and revived.
This tour focuses on Romanian history, culture, customs and traditions. Through giving travellers the chance to explore lesser-visited regions like Transylvania, Untravelled Paths allows local people and tourists to enjoy a ‘cultural exchange’, learning from each other and enriching each other’s understanding and appreciation. The Transylvania Experience gives travellers the chance to stay in typical guesthouses owned and run by local people. This means that tourists get a more insightful and immersive experience of the area they are visiting, and also provides local communities with a valuable source of income and jobs, helping to bolster rural economies.
On many of their tours, Untravelled Paths encourages travellers to ‘live like the locals’, by getting involved in traditional rural activities and past-times including hay-stacking, bread-making and shepherding. This both enriches the tourist’s experience, gives them new skills, and also means that age-old customs can be passed on and protected. Conserving and appreciating Romania’s natural beauty is another important part of this experiential tour. Travellers have the opportunity to take enriching nature walks in the countryside in a low-impact manner, and eat fresh and organic food for the duration of the tour. This tour provides an excellent opportunity for travellers to get to know Romania’s rural side, whilst also benefiting local communities.
