"A spiritual, remote trip to definitely relax and realise what is truly important to you, discover inspirational India!"

Get acquainted with the spectacular landscapes and culture of the Ladakh region on an unforgettable trekking tour. Sometimes referred to as Little Tibet, Ladakh is defined by high-altitude desert landscapes surrounded by majestic jagged mountains peppered with tiny villages and picturesque Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. This classic seven-day trek through stunning scenery and remote settlements allows you to gain a greater insight into the culture and traditions of the Ladakhi and Tibetan people. You’ll begin your tour with a flight from Delhi to Leh, which will give you breath-taking views of the snow-capped peaks of the vast Himalayan Mountain Range.

Two days in Leh, the region’s capital (which sits at around 3,500m), allows you to acclimatise to the altitude as well as explore some local markets, villages and monasteries. Your trek then begins in Likir, a small village near the capital. You’ll cross the high mountain pass of Chamla (4,150m) and pass through Ladakhi Villages where you’ll learn more about traditional ways of life. Hiking through contrasting landscapes, you’ll see snow-clad mountain peaks, barren hillsides and quaint villages nestled in verdant valleys.

Active India Holidays are local operators and, as such, have seen first-hand the benefits that tourism can bring to some of India’s most remote regions. They understand that tourism often helps to alleviate poverty and develop communities and, as part of the global tourism industry, acknowledge that they too have a crucial role to play in providing commercial benefits and financial impetus in local communities. The company is conscious of both the negative and positive impacts its operations potentially have within sensitive environments and communities, particularly in the Himalayas where most of Active India’s trekking and adventure operations are conducted.

To ensure that they operate in as responsible a way as possible, Active India trains all of its tour leaders and support staff on sustainability practices. One example is their ‘Leave no Trace’ policy, which ensures that campsites and trails are left free from any waste. The company even extends this policy to include the waste left by travellers who have come before them, collecting and disposing of any extra rubbish in a safe manner. Active India hopes to contribute towards building a tourism industry that brings pleasure to travellers whilst also constructing a future for the local people and places that the industry depends on.

Day 1

Arrival in Delhi: After arriving in Delhi’s international airport, you’ll receive a traditional welcome before boarding an early-morning flight to Leh.

Day 2

Delhi – Leh: Flying over the Himalayan Range, you’ll enjoy some fantastic views before arriving in a fertile valley north of the Indus River. You’ll transfer to your hotel in Leh, where you’ll have the rest of the day free to relax and adjust to the altitude (3,500m). Leh was an important trading centre along the famous Silk Road from China; walk the vibrant bazaars and admire the nine-story Namgyal Palace which has been likened to the Potala Palace of Lhasa.

Day 3

Thiksey, Hemis and Shey Palace: Tibetan Buddhism is the predominant faith of Ladakhi people. A visit to some of the Indus Valley’s gompas (monasteries) will help you better understand their traditions and culture. First, you'll visit the hilltop Thiksey Monastery, which houses numerous precious objects and sacred shrines. Next, you’ll drive to the Hemis Monastery, India’s wealthiest monastery famed for its gold and silver stupas. Finally, you'll discover Shey Palace. Perched high on a rocky cliff, this was the summer residence of the Ladakh kings.

Day 4

Leh – Phyang – Likir: En route to Likir you’ll stop for a visit at Phyang Monastery and Likir Monastery. You’ll then walk down to the magnificent site of Likir Village.

Day 5

Likir – Sumdo – Yangthang: Trek to Yangthang via the tiny village of Sumdo, and enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding mountains en route. Crossing the small pass of Charatse La (3,700m), you can gaze across at the village’s fields as you walk. Your camp for the night will be situated either near the village school or on the banks of the river.

Day 6

Yangthang – Rizong – Yangthang: This morning sees you descending along the river – you might have to cross several times, so suitable footwear (sandals) is a must! Walking in the shade of trees, you’ll reach the dramatic cliff-side Monastery of Rizong, overlooking the Indus Valley. This monastery is particularly significant for Tibetan Buddhists as it belongs to the Gelugpa sect. After your visit, you’ll return to Yangthang following the same trail.

Day 7

Yangthang – Hemis Shukpachan: Today you’ll follow the path surrounded by hedges of ancient chortens and cypresses, rare in Ladakh, to the village of Hemis. In the afternoon, you’ll get to visit the village and its surroundings.

Day 8

Hemis Shukpachan – Themisgam – Tia Village: You’ll depart Hemis to reach the multi-coloured mountain face of Meptik La (3,750m). From the base, Meptik La seems like an insurmountable wall, but a leisurely half-hour walk is all that is required to climb it. Again, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views over the surrounding mountain range from the top. Descending you’ll reach Themisgam and visit this prosperous village’s castle before continuing to Tia village where you’ll settle down for the night.

Day 9

Tia Village – Chamla Pass – Skindying: Today you'll start with a visit to the nunnery to get an insight into the monastic life. Then, you'll trek to Skindying crossing the Chamla Pass from where you'll enjoy panoramic views of the Himalayan chain.

Day 10

Skindying – Khaltse – Leh: Today's trek is a short one-hour walk to Khaltse where you can visit the local market. Then, you’ll board a vehicle for a drive to Lamayuru Monastery – one of the biggest and oldest monasteries in the region. You'll also stop at Alchi where you can admire the magnificent frescoes of its five sanctuaries. Finally, you’ll drive to Leh where you’ll stay overnight in a hotel.

Day 11

Leh: Today is free for you to further explore Leh and walk to the market. Or, you can opt for an excursion to Thiksey Monastery where you'll attend the prayer.

Day 12

Leh – Delhi: Today you will board an early morning flight to Delhi, before continuing on to your next destination – wherever that may be!
