The detail

"Take a walk on the wild side and volunteer with the ‘Big Five’ at the Shamwari Game Reserve."

Home to the Animal Rehabilitation Centre, Animal Hospital and Rhino Awareness Centre, this project’s mission is to return the 25,000 hectares of neglected land to its former glory and in doing so replenish the wildlife that once called it home. This project will get you roaring and raring to help these endangered rhinos, elephants, big cats and many other predators. Make a mark by volunteering with a project to protect and conserve wildlife and let them make a mark on you in return.See rhinos, lions, leopards and antelopes in their natural environment as you count, monitor and check the predator-to-prey ratios. Shamwari is a well-established breeding centre, and so you’ll also have the chance to map out the breeding areas, monitor the animal numbers and look out for the newest, tiniest residents of Shamwari - from rhino calves accompanied by their protective mothers, to cheetah cubs cavorting around as they learn to hunt through play. You will treasure your time watching these marvellous wild animals, and learn that there’s no going back once you’ve walked on the wild side...

South Africa has unparalleled wildlife biodiversity; however, many animals have become endangered due to habitat change and hunting. In recent years Shamwari has re-established a healthy population of the Big Five as well as reintroducing rare bird species and grazers like zebras to repopulate the African wildlife. By monitoring the landscape as well as the animal species the project works to ensure sustainable conservation, whilst also providing financially and socially for the local community. You can rest assured that you will be making a difference with this experience, which has been branded 'Africa’s Leading Conservation Company' from 1997-2015 in the World Travel Awards. This project works alongside the wildlife charity 'Born Free Foundation' which aims to protect animals in the wild. They also ensure they incorporate and involve the local community, offering education and work within the reserve to conserve a diminishing way of life by teaching them about the importance of Shamwari’s natural habitat. The Rhino Awareness Centre highlights the situation of the African rhino, a species bordering on extinction, whilst the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre helps rescue animals before rehabilitating and releasing them back into their natural habitat. For a truly sustainable experience knowing you’re making a respectable contribution to the conservation of Africa’s wildlife try the Shamwari Conservation Experience.

Day 1

Your escapade begins! Once you’ve arrived at Port Elizabeth airport you will be transferred to the project site. This will be followed by a welcome orientation and briefing in which you’ll get the low-down on the project and what you can expect from your adventure. Settle in to the site and meet your fellow volunteers before you can begin to make new friends with the animals the following day.

Day 2-14

Get an early start to the day and hop out of bed for breakfast before meeting the project coordinators at 8am. Based on a rota, your morning activities will begin; these activities might include game counting and monitoring, telemetry tracking and research, restoration and rehabilitation of the reserve, and maintenance of the reserve at the breeding centre. You also may have the opportunity to volunteer at the Animal Rehabilitation Centre or get involved in community projects. Operations run from 8am-5pm, lunch is between 12-1pm and you are free to explore during evenings (after 5:30pm) and weekends in any which way you fancy!

Day 15

A tearful farewell as today is the day you will return to the airport for your flight home. After spending two weeks in the reserve you’ll certainly look at your domestic cats in a whole new way... Say farewell to your fellow volunteers and project facilitators and head off home.
