“Combine the excitement of a safari holiday with the relaxation of a beach break and see some of the best that Africa has to offer.”
Starting in Nairobi and ending up in Zanzibar, you’ll enjoy game drives in the Masai Mara learning about the area from local guides, as well as finding out more about local conservation efforts with a visit to an elephant orphanage. The Maasai people are able to produce food in deserts and scrublands, and NGOs including Oxfam have suggested that this sustainable lifestyle be embraced as a response to climate change. You’ll have the chance to visit a Maasai village and learn about this fascinating culture, before moving on to spend several nights on the island paradise of Zanzibar.
Tucan Travel minimises the carbon footprint of this tour, travelling by overland truck and using long range fuel tanks to reduce emissions. Accommodation is in small, locally owned hotels and guesthouses, contributing to the local economy, and Tucan Travel works only with businesses supportive of its sustainability and responsible travel policies. Guests are encouraged to opt in to a carbon offset scheme to reduce the impact of their travel to South Africa and all of the wildlife experiences offered by the company are designed to benefit both the animals and the people who depend on them for a living.
Nairobi: On arrival in Nairobi you’ll have the day free to spend as you wish - those interested in conservation may wish to visit the giraffe centre, where endangered Rothschild giraffes are protected and bred.
Masai Mara: Departing Nairobi you’ll have your first glimpse of Kenyan wildlife in the Masai Mara National Reserve, which hosts the big five African game animals as well as various grazing mammals, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals and over 500 recorded species of birds. After a night in a camp just outside of the reserve, you’ll take another drive to the Mara river, vital to the local ecosystem. During the annual Great Migration thousands of wildebeest try to cross the river, while crocodiles lie in wait.
Nairobi: You’ll return to Nairobi for the night where you’ll have more chance to sample the local culture and check out attractions.
Arusha: Crossing the border into Tanzania, you’ll arrive in Arusha and spend the night, before setting off for the Serengeti.
Serengeti: Perhaps the most famous safari destination in Africa, you’ll visit the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater en route to the Serengeti National Park. Among the hundreds of species in the park you might encounter are zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, buffalos, lion, cheetahs, leopards, hippopotamus, hyenas, elephants, vultures, monkeys, warthogs, gazelles and impalas.
Spending the nights camping close to the national park, you’ll have the chance to see some of the breathtaking night-skies, unspoiled by light pollution, for which Africa is so famous.
Arusha: After a final morning of game driving in the Ngorongoro Crater itself, you’ll head back to Arusha for the night.
Stone Town: Fly to the island paradise of Zanzibar, where the UNESCO listed Stone Town awaits. Explore labyrinthine streets and admire intriguing elephant-proofed doors. There are plenty of opportunities here for eating delicious, freshly caught seafood and shopping for colourful souvenirs.
Nungwi: On the way to the idyllic beaches of Nungwi you’ll stop off to visit one of the island’s many spice plantations. Sample spices straight from the source and find out about the various crops grown locally, before stopping for lunch in a local village.
Once in Nungwi, you’ll have two nights to relax and enjoy soaking up some sun in a beautiful setting or strapping on a snorkel and checking out the sealife.
The tour concludes at Nungwi beach, where you can choose to extend your stay, or join a transfer back to Stone Town on the morning of your final day.
