“Experience authentic Brazil in this idyllic fishing village”
Nestled in a fishing village in the Atlantic Forest Natural Park, Pousada Picinguaba is a natural paradise. Lose yourself in this tropical seaside forest (a phrase too rarely heard!), as you stay at the Pousada Picinguaba lodge. “Picinguaba” means “fish shelter”; it is named for the tranquil bay in which the little fishing village sits. The airy rooms each has its own private veranda so you can admire the beauty of the ocean from your gentle swinging hammock. For larger groups, the Casa Verde accommodates six people. It is a cool, quiet haven of white-washed walls and tiled floors.
For a taste of life so close to nature, explore the village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and get to know the locals, or voyage a little further to neighboring towns such as Paraty to learn more about the history and culture of your surroundings. This village was one of the first ports of entry for European colonizers; even what seem to be the most peaceful of places has a story to tell!
The very philosophy of Picinguaba is to live in harmony with nature. This means having a minimal impact. Waste is kept to a minimum by using biodegradable products and only using reusable drinking bottles. Nothing is thrown away unnecessarily: their own compost heap ensures nutrients are funnelled back into the environment and even residue kitchen oil is used to make soap! The soap is to be used on detergents and the amenities are natural products from local partners.
This principle of using local resources extends to the people. The lodge employs local people on a fair wage and offers training opportunities and language lessons too! It has lead a boom in local economy, both through providing jobs, and sourcing food and resources from the local area.
