The detail

"Two of the greatest views, a huge mountain in Kilimanjaro and gigantic herds of elephants? The Porini Amboseli park has them both!"

Mount Kilimanjaro. With its distinctive snowy peak soaring high above the plains, it has come to epitomise the beauty of East Africa. The tallest free-standing mountain in the world, it oversees this vast continent in regal isolation, providing a breathtaking backdrop for some of Africa’s stunning national parks – including Amboseli. Nicknamed the Land of Giants, Amboseli is home to large herds of elephants and, as one of Africa’s few populations to be spared from poachers, their numbers have reached the thousands. To see a herd of elephants walk across the plains under the silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro is to truly see the essence of Africa.

Ten miles north of Amboseli is the Selenkay Conservancy – where Porini Amboseli Safari Camp is located. Established as a haven for the park’s migrating species, elephants, lions, cheetahs and leopards all call it home. Away from the tourist trap of the national park, local animals are unused to people and their natural behaviour allows for truly intimate wildlife viewing. Consisting of just nine tents, the camp retains all the magic of a traditional safari camp, combining seclusion with the luxuries of solar-powered lighting and ensuite facilities. With the opportunity of game drives and days out in Amboseli or exclusive explorations of Selenkay, the Porini Amboseli Safari Camp is ideal for those wanting to unite the iconic with the authentic.

Over the years, migrating species from Amboseli National Park have routinely clashed with local famers and poachers. Killed or driven off land reserved for farming, their habitats shrunk and populations dwindled. Realising the danger, the Selenkay Conservancy leased land off local Maasai farmers with the dual aim of preserving the local wildlife while introducing conservation as a feasible alternative to farming. The conservancy has had considerable success with growing numbers of species returning to the area – including elephants after an absence of 20 years. As 95% of Porini’s employees are drawn from the surrounding areas the relationship between wildlife and the local population continues to thrive, with snaring and harassing almost completely eradicated.

All Porini Camps are created to be as eco-friendly as possible and they are committed to promoting Best Practice in everything they do. Environmental policies for water, energy, solid waste and sewage are all strictly adhered to, solar energy is used throughout camp and other safari companies are strictly monitored to ensure they stay abreast of new developments. Any income from the camps is invested back into the conservancies, educational programmes and above average wages for workers - allowing conservation to remain a viable way of life in Kenya.
