The detail

"Get involved, by this we mean, REALLY involved with community development, shadow a keeper and learn what releasing animals back into the wild is really about!"

Orphaned, injured and rescued orangutans need you! Volunteer at a Wildlife Rescue Centre in Java, the island at the heart of Indonesia, and provide nurturing care to orangutans and other wildlife. You will help the centre’s staff to rehabilitate the animals, preparing them ultimately for release back into the wild. You will get ‘up close and personal’ with all the animals at the centre, including the seven orangutans it currently houses. Discover how rewarding it can be to work with these intelligent and gentle great apes, a species that sadly is increasingly under-threat of extinction. Along with orangutans, you can expect to contribute to the welfare of around 200 animals at the centre including gibbons, macaques, reptiles, small mammals and a variety of birds. Each week you will also join us to one of the eagle release sites to see how they are getting on.

Volunteers will also play an important educational role on the project by getting involved with the running of a club for children along with ‘Community English’ classes for local people. In exchange, you will find a warm welcome from the local people who will be happy to host you for an authentic Javan meal and share their culture with you. Volunteers can also join in with a variety of educational and traditional experiences such as Batik classes or Gamelan lessons. Gamelan-a-ding-dong!

(N.B. Please note that although you will work closely with the animals, the Centre operates a no-touching policy, as physical human interaction can damage their chances at successful release in the wild. Also, the unpredictable nature of wild animals means that there is a danger of injury to volunteers.)

The large-scale deforestation occurring in Indonesia threatens the existence of many species, including the gravely endangered orangutan. Hundreds of animals are losing their habitats, and are dying as a consequence. Orphaned orangutan babies are often captured and sold at market as part of an illegal exotic pet trade, raised in poor conditions for human entertainment. The Wildlife Rescue Centre in Java is a not-for-profit organisation that takes in animals confiscated under Protected Wildlife Law, as well as other injured or orphaned wildlife. The centre has rescued seven orangutans that were being used to entertain humans with demeaning tricks such as smoking cigarettes and cleaning cars, and has also rescued a baby Sun Bear that was for sale on eBay.

Volunteers on the project help the centre’s trained staff to rehabilitate the animals, with the end-goal being a release back into the wild where possible. In October of this year, the centre nursed five injured Asian Honey Buzzards back to health before successfully re-releasing them. For those animals with health or behavioural problems meaning that returning to the wild is not a possibility, the centre will become their permanent home. The centre has also forged a strong relationship with the local village and its people, providing employment and helping to raise awareness of animal welfare at a grassroots level.
