Imagine stepping into a jungle, lush with verdant leaves, bright orchids, butterflies, rushing rivers and waterfalls sparkling in the sunlight. As you wander through the natural beauty you come across a weaving of living roots and vines, like something out of the World of Tolkein: a living bridge. In this ten day experience you will travel to the Northeastern Tribal state of Meghalaya. With undulating rivers, sparkling inviting lakes, gorges, precipitous ravines and incredible hilltop vistas, this is an area like no other. The region is multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, and multi-religious. There is an awe inspiring mix of traditional and modern lifestyles.
Maple Pine Farm is a small, family run operation where you will have the pleasure of staying. The off-grid farm is powered by wind and solar and is surrounded by luscious agricultural land. From your base camp here you will explore the region, spending a few nights in the surrounding local communities.
Travel Roots has partnered with a local operator that has sustainability at their forefront. Their expertise includes village stays, hiking, trekking, documentary groundwork, journalism, research and national parks. They have developed a reputation for unique travel adventures and have created a sustainable, off the grid farm-stay which is the base of this experience.
Arrive in Guwahati Airport in Northern India and spend the night in a Hotel near the airport.
Get picked up in the morning and transferred to Maple Pine Farm where you will settle in and enjoy a gorgeous evening barbecue and bonfire.
Fill up on a delicious breakfast, then depart from Maple Pine Farm on David Scott Trail to Lad Mawphlang, a 16 km trek. In Lad Mawphlang you will be collected and driven to Dawki and Jaintia Hills. Enjoy a night camping under the stars by the beautiful lake there.
Day four will be your first full day hike. You will visit two living root bridges. In the evening, head back to the campsite for swimming and fishing.
After the hikes the previous days, you will have a chance to relax at the campsite and enjoy the scenery. Those who are up for it can visit to nearby villages, bridges and waterfalls.
Head to another village by car. In the afternoon you will be able to hike and or explore caves. You will stay in another tranquil campsite that night.
Start your day early with a morning hike to a charming village and spend the night at a homestay with a local Khasi family. Experience the warmth and hospitality of the local community.
Continue your exploration of the local culture by hiking on to more nearby villages. In the evening you will return to Maple Pine Farm to relax and enjoy.
Visit the famous open market at Shillong and take in the bustling local life. Perhaps find a few souvenirs or gifts for loved ones.
Drive back towards Guwahati, stopping at some stunning scenic sites along the way.
