The detail

"In the centre of its own private reserve, here you may find kangaroos, emus, and bandicoots on your very doorstep!"

Nature will literally be right on your doorstep when you enjoy a stay at Little Desert Nature Lodge. Situated on a 117 hectare private conservation reserve in the Little Desert region of Western Victoria, this comfortable eco-lodge provides the perfect platform for its guests to explore the surrounding natural bushland, and discover the area’s amazing wildlife. The region is fast becoming one of Victoria’s best birdwatching destinations, with over 220 different species! As well as a huge variety of bird species, you might also encounter some quintessential Australian wildlife including emus, bandicoots and kangaroos – and you can observe them all from the comfort of your peaceful and serene eco-lodge.

Take advantage of the fact that the lodge is situated within a private conservation reserve, and learn more about the important conservation work being done in the Little Desert region; why not go on a guided nature walk, or participate in a conservation and research activity to enhance your understanding? If you decide to venture further afield, Little Desert Nature Lodge is located just over an hour from the Grampians National Park, making it ideally placed to allow for the exploration of some of the region’s best attractions including the Naracoorte Caves, Mount Arapiles (which boasts some world-class rock climbing), the wineries of Coonawarra and Wyperfeld National Park.

Owned and operated by Australia’s leading not-for-profit conservation organisation (Conservation Volunteers Australia), when you stay at Little Desert Nature Lodge you’ll be helping to protect Little Desert’s wildlife and inhabitants. Australia is facing an ‘extinction crisis’ in terms of wildlife, with over 30% of its mammals and around 14% of its birds either critically threatened or totally extinct. Indeed, the situation is so dire that Australia has won itself a title – as the global leader in species extinction. In an effort to change this, and to come up with a solution to desert species extinction, a number of organisations are coming together to help secure the future of some of Australia’s most vulnerable species.

The ‘Rewilding the Desert’ initiative is a joint venture between Conservation Volunteers Australia and FAUNA Research Alliance, aiming to combat species extinction. It is hoped that the combined expertise of these two organisations will provide a real catalyst for positive change. The initiative hopes to ‘bring back from the brink’ some of Australia’s most vulnerable wildlife, by reintroducing to their original habitats several species including the Western Quoll, Malleefowl, Numbat, Western barred Bandicoot and Brush-tailed Bettong, among others. Little Desert is also home to a Malleefowl breeding and conservation programme, which is supported by Conservation Volunteers Australia.
