The detail

"This stunning lodge has earned itself a mention from National Geographic for its unique beauty!"

One of National Geographic's ‘Unique Lodges of the World’, Lapa Rios Ecolodge is more than just a resort; a world-renowned model ecotourism project, a pioneer in sustainable tourism, and a haven of peace and tranquillity in nature, Lapa Rios Ecolodge offers the perfect, authentic, rainforest retreat. The lodge itself is set within a 1000-acre private rainforest reserve on the tip of Costa Rica’s wild and wonderful Osa Peninsula. Central America’s last remaining lowland tropical rainforest, the peninsula is estimated to contain around 2.5% of the world’s entire biodiversity - mightily impressive for such a tiny place!

Lapa Rios Ecolodge offers intimate access to both the rainforest and beautifully secluded beaches, with 17 private bungalows overlooking the Pacific Ocean at the point where it meets the stunning Golfo Dulce. From the comfort of screened, open-air bungalows, guests at Lapa Rios can enjoy breath-taking oceanic views, sipping coffee on the terrace as colourful macaws and white-faced monkeys move through the surrounding trees. Lapa Rios is a paradise for lovers of nature, wildlife, beaches and birds; from hikes through primary rainforest and fascinating nature trails, to high-octane surfing and horseback riding on the beach, there are plenty of activities to suit everyone! A trip to Lapa Rios Ecolodge truly is an adventure of a lifetime.

Sustainability has always been a core value at Lapa Rios Ecolodge. Since its inception nearly two decades ago, Lapa Rios has been committed to conserving and protecting its incredible natural surroundings and, in 2003, became the first hotel in Costa Rica to receive a full ‘five-leaf’ status from the country’s Tourism Board through its ‘Certification for Sustainable Tourism’ programme. Lapa Rios’ founders, John and Karen Lewis, have signed a conservation easement that will ensure the permanent protection of over 900 acres of tropical rainforest – this means that mining, forestry and hunting, as well as the construction of mass tourism facilities, will be prohibited in the area. What a fantastic achievement!

Although protecting the natural environment is, of course, a primary concern, supporting local communities also makes up an important part of the lodge’s conservation work. Lapa Rios strives to ‘buy local, and hire local’. Local guides are employed to accompany guests on walks and tours in the surrounding area, giving travellers the chance to learn more about the area whilst also benefiting local people and supporting community economies. Salaries at Lapa Rios are far higher than the national average, and local employees are given the opportunity to rise to top-level management positions. Finally, produce and products are purchased (wherever possible) from local suppliers in the Osa Peninsula.
